Canon 7D Mark II and GPS

Those with a Canon 7DMk2 will be aware of the annoying (to some) feature of the GPS that when it is switched on it continues to log position event though the camera has been turned off. This reduces battery life and turning it off in Settings is a chore and easily overlooked. I understand that the GPS on the 6DMk2 has two modes. The first identical to the 7DMk2 and a second one where the GPS is only active while shooting. Is anyone aware if this feature may be added when Canon update the 7DMk2 firmware? Or is there a hack?

I don't have a 7D2 but on my 1Dx MkII the GPS has 2 modes plus Disable. Mode 1 the camera continues to receive the GPS signals when the camera is turned off. This will use battery power. Mode 2 the camera only receives GPS signals when the camera is turned on. Disabled of course means GPS is not used at all.

I don't know if this feature will ever be added to the 7D2. I suspect that it will be added to the 7D3 whenever that shows up. I would love to have the touch screen features of the 5D4 enabled on the 1Dx MkII but I doubt that upgrade will ever happen too. Only Canon knows for sure, but they generally don't seem to release firmware updates to add features, more often to fix issues in my experience. Are there any Magic Lantern hacks for the 7D2?

Best,
Todd Ferguson

Don't know of any hacks, and I doubt you will see any added GPS settings at this late date. On my 7DII I simply leave it off unless I want to use it, which isn't often for me. I know that is more of a nuisance for others. You could try leaving your menu on the GPS page so that it is right there when you bring up the menu. You could also remove the battery when done shooting. Not ideal solutions, but they could work for some people. All the newer Canons with GPS, such as my 5DIV, give you 3 options. Off, Constant On, or, On With Camera. I have no idea why they didn't do that on the 7DII and others, such as the 6D.

Does the 7D2 allow you to add your favorite menu items to your own custom menu(s)? My camera allows this with at least 10-12 menu items. It makes it easy to get to these menu selections without having to remember so much or go through a dozen or more menus.

Why, because we want more for our high dollar camera money....

I have found that I don't like using the GPS function due to battery drain. If I need GPS data for a shoot, my work around is to take a cell phone picture with Lightroom Mobile and sync it to Lightroom (Classic) where my photos from my cameras reside. Its then a simple copy of the GPS data from the phone picture to all of the pictures taken at the same location with any of my other cameras. Not perfect, but it works reasonably well, especially for cameras that don't have GPS.
