I got an unpleasant surprise from my propane company. They charge $85 a year if I don't buy any propane from them. The stove stopped working last year, so we haven't gotten a delivery. I just called and told them to take the tank away and refund me for the propane that's in it. My previous propane payment was only $79, so I'm paying more not to get propane delivered.
They didn't have to do anything but keep my name on their computer, and they got $85 for that. I'll shiver this winter. I'll show them!

Good for you Jerry. Sometimes companies think the customer can just be screwed over and over again. I have found in my area that there are a number of propane companies to call.

I don't blame you, Jerry. Here's a little unknown situation for propane: The tank exchanges you make to get a refilled propane tank is only 16lbs in a 20lb tank. You're paying $20 for 16lbs instead of approx $15 if you had a supplier fill it with 20lbs. What a rip-off!
Can I say: "That Sucks" on here?
We're lucky here. We have a couple of suppliers who will refill your small tanks.

you can change your name to "The Iceman". which, by the way, was a good movie.

The customer used to be king. Don't cut your nose off to spite your face! I hear your frustration.

Did you get a receipt when they refunded your unused propane.

EDIT: I should have been more clear. This is a little Jotul propane room-heating stove, like a wood stove. I have it in front of the fireplace in the TV/Computer room. I would use it only occasionally, but when it stopped working last year, I never bothered to get it fixed. Maybe I'll take a look at it, and if I can get it working, I'll use a smaller propane tank. If the current tank is full, and it should be, it will have about $377 worth of propane inside. They'll deduct the $85 and any fees and send me a check for what's left.
FYI. You may know this already since you use it. propane is heavier than air. Not everyone knows that It will always seek the lowest point in the room. There is this sports reporter, Hanna Storm, who had an accident with her propane grill. she tried lighting it with a match and the gas that was stuck in the body of the grill blew up.

Jerry I just switch to propane for my kitchen range, because I live alone I don't use much gas so I opted for leasing two 100# cylinders, one last a little over a year, so the other is a backup. the down side is I have to take them in for exchange, but WTH its once a year and there is no min. chg. think it cost me just a tad over $60 for the gas and the lease fee is $100 for 10 yrs.
Jerry we have used propane for everything since the house was built in 1969. We were with the same company for probably 30 years. They sold out to a local oil company and everyrhing remained the same. The oil company went out of business and sold out to a Canadian company and all hell broke loose. The propane cost went sky high and they started charging a surcharge for delivery and a $10.00 hazmat fee every time they delivered and they were delivering once a month. Now I have a 500 gallon underground tank which when full holds 400 gallons plus a 100 gallon air space. About a year of that baloney and I went hunting. I now have a local fuel dealer who has been in business for years that sells propane for ar least $1.00 a gallon less, no added fees and they fill me up about three times a year and I have never run out. Do some checking as it sounds like you ended up with a gouger the same as we did.
