You should expect good and courteous service, however, the wait staff IS working for tips as their starting pay is generally 1/2 of the minimum wage, (at least that what is was when I was waiting tables, higher when I was bartending.) Perhaps if you cannot afford to tip your waitstaff, you can not also afford to eat out, and should stick to the fast food restaurants where tipping is not the norm and they pay their staff minimum wage or higher.

You're right, Bull. Since wait staff at places like Red Lobster are paid (or were paid when my son was there) like $2.79/hour, then it would only be appropriate to raise their wages to $15.00/hour while eliminating tipping. Afterall, not all diners can be relied on to tip anyway. There were nights when my son made a total of $10 in tips. Considering that costs would have to be passed on in the form of price increases, the shrimp platter will cost probably 20% more.

they work for tips because the resturant industry got a sweetheart deal tat allowed them pass most of their staffs wages on to the customer.

Interesting topic and as always gets a lot of comments. I just returned from a trip to Europe, tipping was not expected at the restaurants, prices were no different than prices here in North America for the most part. We had dinner for two with a decent bottle of wine for around 60 Euros which was around 90 dollars Canadian. The equivalent type restaurant here in Canada would be 100 to 120 Canadian and then a tip on top. The service in all of the restaurants we went to was excellent, the waiters were attentive, got the orders right and served the food promptly. They do not rush you out the door in Europe instead letting you enjoy your dinner and surroundings, if you need to get away quickly and you tell your waiter he will bring your bill right away. Obviously their wait staff are paid living wages.

I agree with Bull that the restaurant industry got a sweetheart deal in the low wages they pay.

I do not agree that the prices would have to rise 20% in order for the restaurant to pay minimum wage or even a bit better than that. If all tips were at 20% a server would be making way more than skilled labour. The restaurant owner might tell everyone he would have to raise prices that high but most of that would be going to his pocket not the wait staff that would get minimum wage.

To my way of thinking the whole tipping scheme is way off base, wait staff at a breakfast restaurant provide just as much service as a dinner waiter if not more with the number of times they come and refill your coffee and because breakfast is $10 the get 1 or 2 dollars where the dinner waiter ends up with ten times that. Same work, shouldn't they be paid the same?

That is where 'turn over' comes into play. The thought is that people linger over dinner wherein they eat breakfast or lunch more quickly and the table frees up sooner ready for the next guest. Not any less work involved, (in some cases more) but you end up waiting on more folks with the opportunity to EARN more tips.

That may well be, but it is what it is. But, you Knowing that, and still stiffing your waitstaff, says what about you?
