Any idea if that was Ansel's assistant? Wikipedia describes him as "a friend of Ansel Adams, with whom he collaborated."

There is no indication Greany ever worked for Adams. He was working for the US Government when he took that photo, which is the reason it is in the public domain.

Greany spent many years in Alaska, and traveled widely in the southern areas of the territory and then the state after 1959.

Incidentally the only picture I have seen of Greany was taken by Adams.

I don't think you should post an image that is not yours.

It's in the public domain, but should have been accredited.

Why? He didn't take credit for it.

True, but, IF the OP knew who took it, it would have been nice to say, as another member did, “Photo by J. Malcolm Greany [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons”. On the other hand, if the OP knew only that it was in the public domain, but didn’t know the name of the photographer, it’s a moot point. No harm, no foul. Besides, attribution is not always required; often it’s just a courtesy.

Was it really necessary to high lite some less "savory" aspects of the man's life to confirm your knowledge of him?

Ansel Adams was not perfect. Yes, he did have an affair with assistant Patsy English, but it’s commonly believed that Virginia knew about it. For obvious reasons, Patsy is not mentioned in his autobiography (I’d like to see the first draft, or even an early uncorrected proof of the book.) In his early years, he was often described as unruly, and was taken out of school at the age of 12 to be home schooled. He was prone to illness; Ansel is known to have had at least one major mental breakdown. He was a driven workaholic, often pushing himself and his staff (including Virginia) 15 hours per day. And he was a perfectionist; “Moonrise” was shot in 1941, but it was not until the 70’s that Ansel produced a print to his liking.

All of this just made him human. In my brief meeting with him, he was calm, patient and courteous. I wish I had known him better.

Thank you for your post. It's going to make my coffee taste better this chilly morning in North Carolina.

lamonccranston. Thanks for this post. The world more than ever now need true "heroes" that we can look up to. His work and love of nature and the Yosemite Valley transcends his PRIVATE life. He will always be an inspiration.

This discussion got me thinking. Are there any statues honoring Ansel Adams? A Google search got me this.

Yes, prayer is always a good idea.

Grossly exaggerated. His talent was in the dark room and having someone expert in marketing handle his affairs.

There are many great photographers, but Ansel seems to have risen to the top in the minds of many people. You don't have to specialize in B&W Nature to be great.

If we shoot 24/7 for the rest of our lives, we might approach a quarter of his talent and vision.

If they made digital cameras with 1/4 plate size censors, most of us would be as good as him if not better.
