Did anyone attend a one-room schoolhouse? My father did.
This was taken in the schoolhouse at O'Hara's Mill Conservation Area, Madoc, Ontario.
Just to the right, not included in the photo is the woodstove.
That must have been quite a chore in winter to keep the temperature balanced between
freezing and roasting!

I never attended school in a one-room schoolhouse, but I sure sat in desks like in your photo! That surely takes me back.

My dad did. He was very cerebral, finished his work and listened to the the next grade up's lessons. Graduated from HS at 15 and got an academic scholarship to RPI, out with a MA in applied physics at 19 and into U of R as an assistant Prof. in their physics dept., younger than most of his students. Not bad for a farm boy from the sticks...

Having all of the grades in one room would certainly require a different approach for the teacher!

I sat in desks very similar to those throughout grammar school in the '50s. Very nice shot.

This school may have been in use until the 1960's.
It was moved from its original location to this "pioneer village" sort of location in 1965.
Of course, it may have sat unused for a number of years before it was moved.

Around our part of Ontario, there are dozens (or maybe even hundreds)
of small former schools. In the 1960's the trend was to build large central schools
and then bus children there from all over the countryside.

My mother taught at one in Dixie, TN. She was one of two teachers. They alternated the classes they taught every semester.

I attended a 1 room school in Vermont through 5'th grade, the only one in my class. I would not recommend this as a good way too educate since most of the teachers time is spent teaching the 1'st & 2'd grades. Obviously some handled it better than others.

I like it when a photo can elicit a flood of memories.
