Pardon my French, but I call total B*llsh*t.

In my 30+ year career in the tech industry, I have used pretty much every OS out there, from mainframe to Palm Pilot. BeOS, every Windows since 2.10, various flavors of Unix/Linux and Mac OS since Day One.

I say pick your OS (and the hardware) that best suits your needs. If you're handy with a screwdriver and like to tinker, then build your own. If you just want to get the job done, then pick the computer that best works the way you do.

(Geez, after all this time, you'd think the PC-vs-Mac war would have ended).

That's just part of the URL. Nothing to be concerned about.

I can see his point. Apple is the richest company on the planet, and I bet their high prices have something to do with that. The author mentions the design of Apple products. The designers at Apple are paid more than the engineers. Preventing owners from getting inside and changing/adding was not a good idea. When I was buying Dells, I would buy the minimum memory and hard drive and then upgrade at lower prices myself. With modern Macs, you pay Apple's inflated prices.

Without so many hard drives in that guy's system, I would get the cost down to about $4,400. I built a good system last year for about $1,550.

I agree with you on the B&*^S^&% part. He is out of touch as Apple has already announced a new modular Mac Pro for sometime in 2018 and some new iMac power also. Read Here

I worked my entire career in the tech industry and I whole-hearted agree with you. But, the PC-Apple war is like religion. You cannot argue rationally with beliefs.

And don't forget the fanatics that will stand in line for days to get the latest and greatest Apple product and pay those high prices. More power to them.

It seems that you didn't read/comprehend the article. It was not an Apple vs PC article. It was strictly talking about performance/upgradabilty/price, and how the current Apple ecosystem does not feature a computer that meets his needs, so he built his own. He never bashed Apple or specifically promoted Windows.

He did EXACTLY what you said " If you're handy with a screwdriver and like to tinker, then build your own." It always amazes me when people call BS! on an article and then proceed to actually VALIDATE the article by suggesting EXACTLY what the article stated.

I guess you didn't read either. First, the new iMac has a 27" display and he wants a LARGER DISPLAY. Second, neither of these systems is USER UPGRADEABLE - "With an all-flash architecture" means that everything is soldered to the motherboard. No slots to add your own video card, no drive expansion bays, no RAM slots.

Something that MIGHT come out "sometime in 2018" means NOTHING to a person that needs a computer NOW.

The video card it comes with is not as powerful as the one the writer installed in his self-built computer. It comes with 8GB of video RAM standard, the one the writer used has 11GB of video RAM standard.

The new iMac has a 27" display, the display the writer used is a 42.5" display.

The new "iMac Pro also supports UP TO 4TB of SSD" - the computer the writer built has 22.5TB of SSD.

The processor in the new iMac tops out at 4.5GHz, exactly the same as the one the writer used.

"Modular" in these systems means that you order them from a "menu" and Apple adds what you want when they build it.

There is LITERALLY no comparison between the new iMac and the system that the writer built, either from a hardware standpoint or price standpoint. To get the new iMac to even have 75% of the performance that the system the writer built will cost you well in excess of $10,000 - 50% MORE than the writer spent for his system.

You did not read the article, did you? To manage heat load (no internal fan is a religion in Cupertino) Apple's system designers throttle down the output of the CPU to prevent internal heat buildup. Here's the money quote:

"Throttling. Have you ever held a powerful GPU? They are huge; almost the size of an iMac by itself, and that's why you can't get a powerful GPU in any Mac. Even if an iMac has the same chip as a comparable Windows computer, by slowing down the performance of that chip, it will create less heat, and Apple can save space. I love the beautiful design, but for my business, I need the best tool for the job, not the sleekest."

Interesting how he failed to mention the expense of buying new Windows software.

Their value is in their stock price. ....I am a Pharmaceutical analyst for a hedge fund. I am retiring at the end of the year. About 10-11 years ago I am having lunch in a midtown restaurant with my friend who works at Morgan. This guy stops by to talk to my friend. As he leaves he says "buy Apple". I ask my buddy who was that? A guy who knows his $hit he says. When I go back to the office I put in a buy order for Apple. That year I make 3 separate buys. Still, own it. here are screws on the bottom of my MacBook Pro. If I knew as much as you regarding computers/laptops I might be considered dangerous. I don't even own a screwdriver.
