How to make your own stereo image to view with anaglyph glasses

The first step is to capture two color image using a horizontal separation of your choice. About three inches apart is good for starters, more for distant landscapes and less for closeups.

Load the images on your computer and make sure to level them equally.

For the left image, remove all of the green and blue channel leaving only red (image 1) and for the right image remove all of the red channel (image 2). Both image will look very dark but we will fix that shortly.

Now superimpose the images by selecting a single common point in each image. If you don't know how to do that in your editor you can use IMGonline.com.ua. Image 3 shows the settings I used for this merge.

The merged image will still be dark so you will need to brighten the result. You also need to crop two of the edges because the merge will not align perfectly.

You can view the result with your red/cyan anaglyph glasses

Resolution is not a limitation of the process. It depends only on the starting resolution. If you are using your own images you can get nearly all of the camera's resolution. If you start from someone else's posted image you are restricted by whatever size they actually posted. In either case you will only lose a little from two edges.

If I had used a 24MP camera the resolution of the anaglyph version would have been over 23MP.

The largest conversion Dave has posted so far is about 3 MP.

Here is a full resolution example - more than 15MP from two 16MP images taken with a Nikon Df.

Further information about 3D will be posted outside of FYC.
