Greetings fellow Hoggers. I have been lusting for a standard 24-70 zoom f/2.8 for a while now. Getting older I have developed tremors in my hands and need IS, VC, or OS to take acceptable images hand held. Being a Canon guy I usually purchase Canon or Sigma IS or OS lenses to compensate for my shakes. Neither Canon or Sigma offered the 24-70 with stabilization, so thought I would give Tamron's offering a try, as I do have the Tamron 70-200 VC which I am pleased with. ( I couldn't afford the Canon version)
The lens arrived last week and wanted to take it for a test drive under challenging conditions, so I decided to hit the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Visitors Center with the lens mounted on my 5D MKII, which has horrendous lighting consisting of white florescent, strobes and spot lights often all at the same time. It is a beast, quite heavy however from my test shots I can't help but be delighted! What are your thoughts on my initial images? Viewing with my tired old eyes they look crazy sharp to me!
As a side note; I received via email from Tamron a notice of $150.00 off all qualifying lenses, which the 24-70 G2 was listed as one. Usually making my online purchases from B&H or Adorama I called to order the lens and both stated they knew nothing of the instant rebate and the lens listing for $1200 I really needed the discount. Thus enter Greentoe. I submitted a price of $1050 and it was picked up by another East Coast camera store within an hour, and I had the lens 4 days later. I shall definitely use Greentoe in the future.

Michael, these are very good examples of the photos this lens can take, with your knowledge of course. I am now leaning towards that lens myself. Thank you for the post.
Although the images are only as good as the screen they're viewed on, and I'm using my POC Dell laptop at the moment, in my opinion they look very nice, very nice indeed, plenty sharp and lots of detail.
Canon's 24-70 f/4L IS USM is a really good lens and with the stabilization, you can shoot at amazingly slow shutter speeds and still get really good images, plus it's a lot less expensive than the f/2.8 lens. Since I already had the older EF 28-70 f/2.8L, when I considered buying the 24-70 f/2.8L II, I instead got the EF 24-70 f/4L and the 100 f/2.8L macro, both with IS, for the cost of the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, and since I already had the 16-35 F/2.8L, I have 16 to 70 mm at f/2.8 covered.

I don't think you will be disappointed should you decide to get this wonderful lens.

I have the Canon 24-105L II f/4 which has been my go to lens. However, I believe I'll be using the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 just as much. I'm going to the Broomfield Railroad Museum this Saturday taking both lenses for comparison shots.

Jakebrake, very glad to view your excellent images on the new Tamron. In particular, my SP 24-70mm G2 arrived an hour ago and I haven't taken it out yet. Thanks for the feedback.

You are welcome. I think you will love this lens. I do mine from the initial test shots. Am going to the Broomfield Railroad Museum on Sat and see what happens with bracketed photos for HDR. I can't hardly wait!
Cheers
