Suddenly neither LR nor Windows can see my SD cards unless I restart computer after inserting card in the computers onboard reader. I have not changed cards or changed the operating system (Window 10) except for Microsoft updates. Anyone else encounter this issue (and resolve it)?

Sounds like a Windows issue with the card reader or driver. It does not sound like a Lightroom problem.

I use a (cheap) USB plug in card reader more often than the card reader built into my laptop because it is faster. Do you have or can you get a USB card reader?

Perhaps reload/update the driver for the reader? (under device manger in control panel)

Or use the cable direct and forgo any reader - just another layer for potential problems. In addition if you have two slot camera with different cards CF vs SD you don't care.

Win 10 Pro has disabled two of my three card readers over the past six months with no apparent resolution in sight! An internal reader and a Transcend external USB reader no longer work. A StarTech external USB reader is still operational.

Have you gone into device manager in control panel and (re)enabled the devices?

I did indeed; no luck. The internal unit apparently no longer has a valid driver with no updated driver available. The external unit supposedly has the most recent driver and support files but still doesn't work. I've contacted MS support 3-4 times with no resolution.

I've had the same problem with an internal WiFi device and a DVD player. They didn't function for about six months after an update then amazingly came back to life after a subsequent update... Both problems were fixed with the same update.

The second last update left me with only the boot driver functional with six other drivers not recognized! This was fixed two days later with a patch update.

I know Microsoft thinks regular updates are a necessity to reduce problems with malware; however, I'm not too sure is malware wouldn't be the best of two evils!?

That’s indeed painful. Does the computer manufacturer have updated Win10 drivers for its peripherals?

I have the latest available from both the manufacturer and MS.

I suspect if I bug MS enough I'll eventually see the "invalid" hardware working again at some point in the future...

No cables involved with the external reader; plugs into a USB port. I haven't looked at how the internal reader is connected?

And my point! Why struggle with the external reader when the camera connects direct to the USB WITHOUT the reader and you could care less what flavor card your camera has? AT get you pictures off the camera while figure out if it is the card reader.
