Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4 question

I don't know what I did, but when I click on 'tools' and 'start HDR', the last picture I worked on shows up in the first box of 3 boxes. After trying everything I could think of to remove that picture, I finally deleted it. Now when I open up 'start HDR' another photo is there in box #1! My question is, can I uninstall DPP 4 and then re-install and not lose any of my photos? All my photos are in my docs folder among other places.

First of all DPP is operating 100% normally. Based on your description there is absolutely nothing wrong. The HDR tool always assumes the currently opened picture is one of the series you will perform HDR on. If it is not, you select browse directly under that picture in the HDR tool and just choose another picture. Second even if you uninstalled and reinstalled DPP it would have zero affect on your images since they are not stored in DPP. But there is still no valid reason to uninstall it. Did I understand you correctly that you deleted the photo permanently? I can't imagine why you would do that unless its was an unwanted image.

MW took some of the words out of my mouth ... Before starting the HDR tool, select the image 1 (click on it so it's the active / selected image). Even if the wrong image is selected when starting, each of the three images have a browse button underneath when the HDR tool is first started. I say this using DPP v4x. The v3 software may be different, but you should be able to figure it out ...

Regarding deletion of photos if the editing software is uninstalled. NO - it doesn't work that way for this software.

BTW - your deleted image should be in your trashcan and can be recovered, which you should do before continuing.

He indicates he's using DPP 4.

Thank you MW and CC, much appreciated! Will try again in the morning. I just don't remember opening up the HDR tool and seeing a photo in box #1- but I thoroughly get what you're saying.

I don't use DPP for HDR processing, but your question prompted me to try on some 3-image groups I'd captured in the past. The menu option off the tools menu is greyed-out until you select at least one image. Here's a screen capture from when I have the first of a 3-image jpeg group selected. I can browse the two empty boxes as well as browse and change the first image. The doc says it will work on RAW (CR2) too, but I'd have to mount drive with RAW images to confirm myself.

That is the way it works. It always starts with the current image.

I ONLY shoot raw and I can confirm 100% that the HDR tool works with raw files.

I'm using DPP 4.7.1 I believe that's the lastest version.

Yes - just go the usa.canon.com and follow support / download for your camera model. You'll eventually be prompted for an EOS serial number. You can use your camera or any EOS body to get past this prompt.

Its actually 4.7.20, but the change is probably very minor.
