Reducing Size of photo.

Hello to everyone! I'm new to the posting section but have read and enjoyed everyone else's post.
Please remember the old saying "there are no dumb questions" when I ask a question.
I need to know how to reduce the size of a photo in order to get it printed correctly on line. Every time I submit one for a banner or bumper sticker or even sometimes just a photo, the on line photo gets chopped up and it is not what I want printed.
I use iphoto and Picasa for my picture editing. Thanks in advance for your help!

Sorry I don't know these programs or I would help. I use Elements and you can just click on the image menu and then select resize from the list. I don't know how Picasa is set up. But someone here will know.

You're Welcome ALF, I would have thought that someone else would have commented by now on how to do it.

Maybe I have misinterpreted your post, but i suspect that you are having problems with the aspect ratio of your image being incompatible with the aspect ratio of the prints you have ordered.
You mention "bumper stickers" and "banners" both of which would have aspect ratios vastly different from the 3:2 or 4:3 of the images which you may be sending. A banner or bumper sticker on the other hand may have an aspect ratio of 1:10. perhaps 1:20. You simply cannot fit a relatively fat image into a narrow slot.

Thanks Photoman. Does this mean I will not be able to get a banner or bumper sticker printed? I not sure what ratio i should be using or how to change the ratio.

Aspect ratio equals length divided by width. The aspect ratio of the image you submit to your printer must match the aspect ratio of the finished product you are ordering.
Are you in a position to discuss this with your printer directly? or are you ordering online?
In the meantime, this might help:

"There Are No Dumb Questions Except The One You Don't Ask"
In Picasa when you click Print you are given choices at the top left on how to print: Wallet, 3.5x5, 4x6, etc. and the choice to Shrink To Fit, Crop to Fit and more. This should help.
And welcome to UHH!

There are ways to get this done, but too numerous and detailed to list here. If interested, send me a PM and we can discuss some options.
You might try google:
pixresizer download
Pixresizer is free and works good.
What I think you need to do is crop the image to the desired aspect ratio. You can do this in many programs including Picasa I believe. Then just export and off you go.

Try a free download called Photoscape.

Many printing sites will tell you if your download does not fit the print size selected, and let you crop the photo to the proper dimensions before printing or select another size that will fit. I usually download my photos in the largest size I have after I crop at home for composition. That way I do not have to download again if I later want to print in a larger size or shape. If you do crop before download make sure you save the larger size. If you crop to 4x6 and don't save the full size version, then later want a 8x10 you will have to scale up the 4x6, never a good thing.
I have learned that it also depends on the sensor in your camera...if you use a point and shoot the print size is dif than if you use a standard DSLR with a normal size sensor
meanwhile..your questions helps answer some I have had
Hi Alf,
I use Iphoto also. When you send a picture via email you have 3 choices in the lower right hand corner. Small, Medium and Large. When I'm uploading pictures to a website and I get a fatal error message ( file to large ), I'll export the photo to my desktop. When you export the photo, you have the same three choices you had sending an email. Click on small and it should upload. Good Luck....
