In coloring close to a tri-color collie and somewhat similar in appearance, I understand these fellows "need" to be herding something or other, be it the kids or the cats.

I have a Border Collie which is similar and he will heard anything, chickens, cows, sheep and yes Kids too. The Kids don't like it cause he will nip them in the but just like he would sheep. In his mind he is simply doing his job. He is a working dog and very active and very smart. If you have an Australian Shepherd, don't teach him anything that you don't want him to do, because they never forget, they learn quick and never forget. Mine knows about 30 or more words, and I can communicate with him with out saying anything, just hand signals. Smudgey is my dogs name and he is my best friend, Good picture, beautiful dog.
