In my butterfly garden, the nectar plant known as BRAZILIAN VERBENA (Verbena virginiensis) is an equal to the better known BUTTERFLY FLY BUSH (Buddleia). It is an easy to grow perennial that also self-seeds (blooms first year from seeds)...any unwanted plants are very easy to remove. The slender plants grow to about 6' tall and remain very narrow at maturity. My best results have resulted from allowing a small area to become thick, which it will do if allowed to self-seed itself. Flowers are grown and bloom in clusters where
the resulting seeds are craved by Goldfinches. They bloom from summer until frost.

Enjoy the rest of a beautiful weekend!

All are absolutely beautiful, Bob, and thanks so much for the information on the verbena. It's sold at our botanical garden sale each year, and I'm adding it to my 'gotta get' list. I think it grows better and lives longer than the butterfly bush in our climate. So good to see you posting again, and I hope all is well.

Hello, again, Donna! Glad you dropped by! It's shortcomings include only two in my experience...first, it is susceptible to powdery mildew and it's growth habit is a bit
on the "bad hair day" style. I like to use some 5' stakes around a group of half a dozen plants and twine tied around them to make a circular enclosure. This also aids in supporting the weight of the goldfinches who visit every day.

Thanks for adding to my post! These plants have attracted the widest variety of pollinators to my garden of any of my plants.

Fantastic images, Bob!! This verbena is new to me, but I can see it is well loved by the variety you captured!!

Afternoon, Angela! Thanks for paying a visit! It bears very little resemblance to the "normal" Verbena. It is available as a plant (dixie-cup size) as well as seeds. Truly one of the premier attractors in my garden!

Have a nice fall season.

Super nice shots Bob!!!!!

As I mentioned to Janos, Texas is an enviable spot if you are after butterflies...even the ones we consider as "exotics".

Thanks for visiting, commenting and for the multiple smilies!
