Fall colors?

Yesterday, I drove to Richland County, WI to check out the leaf displays. They were not all that colorful, but it has been a warm fall, so it is what it is. The problem seems to be the focus on leaves . I seem to always get kind of blurred shots. Is this my fault, or the lens, or something different. Using a Nikon 5300 and the kit lens AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II. VR on, AF on and off. Hand held.

In the first image I would describe this effect as "clumping". According to Photoshop - Select > focus area, everything below the sky is in focus (even though it certainly doesn't look it). There was a previous thread a little while back in which Gene51 posted two examples http://static.uglyhedgehog.com/upload/2017/10/22/508740-makoqeta_057.jpg
together with the likely cause. Perhaps your photos have the same problem?

I have the same lens as you - different camera, never use noise reduction in camera, always shoot raw and try not to use excessive pp. That lens gives me good results even on my ten years old D200.

Same here. It's amazing. Usually, I'm almost finished clearing the leaves from the yard by the end of October. This year, most of the leaves are still on the trees. The mountains are still green!

As for the lack of sharpness, you have to consider two things: camera movement and lack of perfect focus, either manual or automatic. Test the focus on a tripod under good, controlled conditions - good light and a sharp target with good contrast. Use both manual and auto focus. If you can't get sharp focus doing that, then it's an equipment problem.

I'm glad it's not just me.

I went to all the old haunts: Cooperstown, Ithaca etc and nothing. Went to a local place in NJ and nothing..

There is still a lot of green in NJ and it's supposed to rain the next couple of days. I will take another look this weekend.

So far I have been very disappointed.

I bet the saturation slide got pushed a little to far on picture #1 of boberic post. I just got back from Maine 2 day's ago and while the colors were stunning they certainly were not that saturated. Just my opinion.

There is a third thing to consider. The leaves may have been moving in the breeze.
