Was out today taking all kinds of shots. lots of verticals, lots of standing tilted on river banks. Got lots of long exposure cascades. I got back and now the shutter seems to be making an "air" sound when it goes. It "seemed" to be slow too, but the info says otherwise. Must be the sound makes it seem slow. What happens when a shutter goes?? I just assumed it would just quit. It's got about 50,000 images on it. Images look fine, tho I haven't uploaded to the computer yet. If not the shutter what inside the Nikon that would make an air brake sound?? Thanks!!
Do you have the top left command dial set to "Q" - quiet?
I believe it's the Q setting also.

I know what you mean by the "air" sound (I think). When I use Live View, the shutter seems slower, but the pictures are fine. If the shutter goes bad, so will your pictures.
Send it back for cleaning and adjustment. They come back like new.

All kinds of things can happen when a camera shutter goes. I've had nothing happen when the shutter was pressed in a Nikon D300 camera that just stopped working. In the case of my Fujifilm Finepix Pro S3, a piece of the shutter fell out of the mirror box when I took the lens off. My current Nikon D800 started having irregular images, the lower 1/3 portion of the image was black every 6th or 7th frame. I kept shooting and finally the shutter just stopped after 200K plus actuations. Everyone probably has their own tales to tell! Cheers!

200K shutter clicks. That's about the lifespan of a fully used, Nikon top end full frame camera. I have heard the same story on one Canon crop sensor DSLR camera. That is amazing too.

This sounds the closest. The shutter is doing fine. BUT the viewfinder seems to be lagging. The viewfinder will even stay closed if I don't release the shutter button. But images are 100% correct. Kinda like "manual", only the shutter does it's job correctly. Was thinking something got bumped when I was climbing around the river banks....
I never use "live view" so this maybe the problem. I'll check youtube for a lesson on live view. ~ And I did re-charge battery, just to get rid that possibility.
Ok, I got it.
It got switched from continuous quiet to continuous. Which someone mentioned right off the bat.
Had a feeling it was something I did while climbing over stuff.
Thanks hogs!! Yet another problem solved by the hogs!

Good to see the non-issue has been solved. You can always count on someone here to do your thinking for you.

What's your point?? I am a senior citizen asking for help. My thinking process is challenged these days....

Was my comment vague? My point is, it's good to know that your camera is working properly, and good that the cause of the odd noise was explained.
