Just finished making a device to mount a ball-head to, for My lovely Pentax spotting scope. I can set the device right on the Shooting table and not have to get around behind a trip-pod. It works for me. a leftover sink cut-out of corian, and a lovely hunk of black walnut And a Ball he'd I got (New) for $17.00 on amazon. what do y'all think. Got other ideas??

Beautiful! I read all these articles about people making things out of fancy wood, but where do you get fancy wood? I have plywood and pine. Still, stain can work wonders.

Speaking of mounting things, between dash cams, GPS, XM radios, and cell phones, there are dozens of different kinds of mounts available, and I've mixed and matched and modified to get what I want.

A hunk of black walnut that I happened to have "hanging around" in my wood-shop. I have more invested in my woodworking tools than I do in cameras and photo stuff, And a work shop Norm Abrahams wood be proud of. Yup!! I'm a woodworker, got the tips of two fingers missing to prove it. What "two fingers missing" proves is, that I'm not a very SAFE woodworker. By the way, Jerry, there's fancy wood suppliers everywhere, on line or in most Towns. Just gotta look. Bob

Many/most woodworking shops stock wood, especially exotics. Alternately, you can order online from companies like Woodcraft.

Really nice job - kudos, and sorry to hear about the fingers - I‘ve seen it happen all too often. When I was teaching my son woodworking safety, I had a sign with warnings and common mistakes over each power tool. But the biggest sign, which is still on the wall of my shop as a reminder, caused by sanding the ends of two fingers off on a large belt sander (lucky it wasn’t a saw or a jointer) reads: “where will your hands go if the work suddenly disappears?” I used to have a friend that made a point of counting his fingers before and after each shop session just as a safety reminder.

Where I live, it would have to be online, although Lowe's does stock oak.

Did you ever see the table saw that stops the instant a finder (or hot dog) touches it. I've seen the inventor demo it on TV, but he was not allowed to use his finger, hence the hot dog. Amazing technology. Your finger can touch a spinning blade but not be cut.

I'd have to shop online for fancy wood.

Years ago, my wife bought a piano, and it arrived in a rough packing crate - made of mahogany! I kept that wood for a while, but I don't know what finally became of it.

I think you ought to know that "Main Photography Discussion" means photography-related discussion. However, Admin hasn't moved it so I guess about any old thing can be dumped here.

Sorry - I guess I’m guilty also - mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

But, since we’re already pretty far down the road, Jerry, it’s called a Saw Stop and has become very popular especially with school shop classes. The only downside is when it works, it uses a cartridge and destroys the blade - a couple of hundred dollars, but cheaper than an ER visit, and the saved fingers - priceless.

Thing is he can use this setup with a camera seeing it has a arca Swiss type mount on the Ball head. Less than 5 sec and BAM his camera is on and ready😃

It's a good feature with two issues as I see it. If you change to a Dado blade I believe you have to change to a different cartridge brake setup. At least that was what I recalled reading when it was introduced years ago. Second if the wood you are cutting had too high of a moisture content it could mistakenly fire the brake and destroy your blade.

I have had Delta Unisaws in my shop for over 30 years and still have all my fingers... So, I must not be a real woodworker. The real thrill is a several pound 6" diameter panel raising cutter doing 7,000 rpm on a shaper though...

Best,
Todd Ferguson
