Ellen, I would think Tampa would be a great location to find ethnicity. Have you considered Ybor City (Cuban) or perhaps Tarpon Springs (Greek). Also, watch for local ethnic festivals and events. Florida is a melting pot and a lot of the opportunities are free!

Those are all great suggestions and you can add the Seminole gatherings.

It sounds to me, although you don't say this, that you want to shoot images of people on the streets in the likeness of what NatGeo would do, right? First off, you need to practice a lot to get images like that; the photographers they hire are professionals who have wonderful ability and most likely years of education and/or practice. At first in photography, it's not about the equipment, it's about getting the shot right and any camera can do that if the photographer uses it correctly and artistically. Practicing photographing any people will help you attain this goal. There are hundreds of people shots to be gotten anywhere you go, it's about having an eye for the shot and this, too, can be attained if it does not come naturally. In general, the viewing public likes shots of children (doing something or looking cute), babies, old people of either sex, people interacting, people in less than optimal situations (i.e., homeless or street people), and this is just for a start. Street scenes are often viewed in black and white as the starkness of BW adds to the image. I think you need to work on getting "an eye for the shot" and not worry about having expensive equipment. If you have a decent iPhone or other type of smart phone you can even start with that. Having expensive equipment does not automatically make any of us better photographers. Read up on people photographers and look at their images to learn more. Check out Werner Bischoff (I just went to an exhibition of his work) as well as the premier people photographer, Henry Cartier-Bresson who founded Magnum Photos in 1947.

I must start off and say your love of photography is a passion that many here share.
I also don't understand how you want to shoot street photography on the level of National Geo shooters?
Wow I have to tell you I moved to Florida 15 months ago (Hallandale Beach) on east coast above Miami and this is an ethnic
wonderland. I am a producer and when I go to Starbucks their are so many looks and countries I can't even
identify where they are from. You can be in Russia, Haiti, a multiple of Latin countries, rich, middle class and very poor.
If you watch the last Academy Award winner "Moonlight" you will see places in Miami that are so different from the glitz.
In Aventura you have refugee's rich and poor and restuarants from everywhere. The Cuban presence is very visual.

Last year I saw an article about a star Geo shooter (can't remember his name) and how he went about setting up a portrait
shot in a foreign country. The concept was a young man won being his assistant for a trip.
The thought process and tricks of the trade were amazing. The Nat. Geo. shooter are some of the
best in the world. They shoot and shoot to get that image that plays to your mind.

One of my camera guys told me that when doing documentaries they would spend time
in a place and get to know the people. In his case American indians. Another thought is to spend a lot of time on the shot.
Something I need to do. What can we do to help let us know stay in touch.

OK I here you need to continue your passion. Can I ask what camera you have to work with? How bad is your money situation?
I feel you just need some help.

A couple of not-to-distant places come to mind for cultural diversity. First is Tarpon Springs, the Wat Mongolratanaram Thai Temple in Tampa (excellent food there also) and lastly Ybor City. I can't imagine not finding interesting subjects at any of those locations.

Have fun and post.

Plain and simple photography is turning out to be a very expensive interest.
When I do not have my camera with me I feel lost. I need to keep shooting away.
I shoot close ups of people but I have found that most people in Florid do not have
culturally interesting faces of different ethnicity.

I am trying to emulate National Geographic photography without having to travel far.

Any suggestions for person on a fixed income living in Tampa Bay, Florida?

Move to New York City, many people are less racially biased there.

Riverwalk in downtown Tampa has lots of foot traffic. There are great opportunities for "people" photography, I like dusk and night time there. Folks have been friendly and relaxed. The constantly evolving light schemes spice up the self assignment as well. The street fountain near the Glasier Children's museum offers people playing in the fountains with colored lights added after dark.

Shoot film. Expense far less going in. Far more controllable on gear controls AND exposure. More gutteral and rewarding. Just all around better. Don't have to worry about the KJU EMP's invalidating our digital eguipment!

There is money to be made with your camera in your local community. Check with car dealerships, Realtors, insurance companies, or any other local business that requires large volumes of photographs. You won't get rich but the work is out there.

Sorry, I don't think there is much help, if you think in a ethnical diverse place like Florida, you find the people to shoot too boring!

I had a friend who, upon retiring, could not decide on a hobby.
The final candidates were either a Yacht or photography.
Ultimately he chose photography. He said it was cheaper!

First, how do you hope to display your images? Print? What size? Online? If online, you can probably get by very nicely with an older Canon Powershot that has a decent lens. I like a G12, but I have found small 10 MP ones for $8.00. If you are using natural light and online (only) displays, it's one way to go. If you want artificial lighting, then it is another matter. I'm not sure what "ethnic" faces can't be found where you are. I'd be busy just shooting facesfron New Jersey who move down there!

Perhaps it's time for a UHH support group.

My own passion of photography has turned into an obsession. Even in limiting my aquisitiions to only used and sale equipment I still wind up spending all I have.

I've twisted my back out from the large assortment of lenses and gear I carry with me , daily, in a trusty backpack
-And I regret none of it.

As to the op's questions ..I bet if you venture outside of your neighborhood somewhere on the bussline..you'll find plenty of ethnic diversity .
Then there's still wild life and fauna to consider..If those doesn't work there's ALWAYS real estate that needs to be photographed for sales and pets and sports equipment and boats and vehicles that all need photos to be sold or beaches & beach beauties in need of calender/ souvenirs images ; there's always a party, race; event, grand opening , or other celebration in need of documenting somewhere.

The beauty of National Geographic was that it was shot in glorious distant lands.. which means unless you can get a swamp boat and visit the everglades you might have to go with metro street photography. There's plenty of metro and streets in Florida.

Oh I guess I left out macro photography: there's an entire world waiting to be discovered up close. You just have to find it.

But if you want to make money in photography ... well that's an admirable goal. Who wouldn't want that?
