The Spanish word "alto" to make people stop comes from German "halt", from "halten" (to stop), from where English took "halt" too. It makes perfect sense to use either "pare" or "alto", because both are short and mean "stop". Notice that "alto" (=tall) and "alto" (=stop) look the same, but they are not related.

I remember Stop signs in Hialeah, FL, a NW suburb of Miami used to read 'STOP' and below in smaller letters 'ALTO'.
That 'burb was always heavily Latin .

A Pan Am 727 flight, waiting for start clearance in Munich, overheard the following:
Lufthansa (in German): "Ground, what is our start clearance time?"
Ground (in English): "If you want an answer, you must speak in English."
Lufthansa (in English): "I am a German, flying a German airplane, in Germany. Why must I speak English?"
Unknown voice from another plane (in a beautiful British accent): "Because you lost the bloody war, Mate!"

I can recall n Avianca Airlines plane crashing into Cove neck (about 3 miles from where I was living) because the plane ran out of fuel. Apparantly the pilot never knew that the word EMERGENCY would have cleared any runway for a straight in approach. Avianca is the flag airline of Colombia--spanish speaking pilot.

In 1915, the first Stop sign was installed in Detroit. It was a white sign with black writing. It wasn't until 1954 that red stop signs became the law of the land. Before that, they were yellow. Why not red. They didn't have good red paint! It faded too quickly.

Interesting article and interesting video.

If they weren't READ, no one would stop.

It was 166 pages long and recommended a yellow stop sign with black letters. The 1954 revision, however, called for the stop sign to be red with white letters, in step with the color-coding system developed for the railroad and traffic signals. “Red has always been associated with stop,” Hawkins explains.

When I was in Japan 20 plus years ago I had to take a Japanese course for driving a military vechicle in Japan. The one big difference was in the signs. The stop sign was triangular and blue with the word stop. Another difference was that student drivers for a period of two years had to have a sign on their vechicle proclaiming that they were student drivers. The exception was for the active military and they had to take a two week class, this also included any dependents and diplomats that wanted to drive in country.

Drunks run Stop signs; stoners wait for them to turn green.
