It took many shots to get a cardinal inflight. Any suggestions on on to get one with better focus would be appreciated.

Great shots of the Cardinals. I really like the first one, even though I know that the last one must have taken the most patience. I have trouble with focus too. There are several families of Cardinals that come to my feeder twice a day, but I have yet to get a really sharp picture.

don't forget to have a smaller aperture if light allows.

I like the composition of the first one. Birds in flight are really hard, but I like how you captured the wings and tail all spread out.

Small birds are very difficult to get in focus in flight. It just takes practice and some luck. Also a fast shutter speed and a camera with good tracking focus.
