Australians aren't patriotic in the way Americans are, not many countries seem to be. It's more a national pride in sporting prowess and achievements of the "Little Aussie Battler" in different fields on the world stage. All without the ordained by God aspect. Proposed mosques are approved or knocked back with some regularity. Opposition can be fierce and ugly. In my area a large, traditional architecture, Sikh temple was recently completed and Sikhs run a franchise bakery. You would be surprised at how many locals think Sharia Law has landed.
