A well-embellished variation of an old con. Thought to have started in Nigeria, this one is attempted all over the world now. The amazing thing is that people regularly fall for it.

Interesting statistic on these, and the other variations. Dr Phil has one or more of these schemes on his show every month. The ones he shows are "Catfishing schemes" based on the old hook... love and romance.... and money.
It's been shown statistically that the continuation of these schemes is based on a 5% success rate world wide. That's 5% of the attempted scams, which likely measure in the hundreds of thousands if not million attempts.
Are you expected to believe all these. Certainly not, but as long as 5% success rate is achieved, such scams will continue.

To continue on @Kuzano's point, I recall reading some years back in a tech magazine how MI5 reported that on average 5 people a week would show up in the lobby of the hotel where they were supposed to collect their "reward" - that number seems to hold. Never underestimate the stupidity of the public...
This is why there have been, over the years, suggestions made about putting a charge on sending email - some tiny fraction of a penny that would add up to 2 cents a year for the average user but for the scumbags who perpetrate these phishing expeditions by sending out millions of emails daily it would make for some kind of cost to their pocketbooks.
