Aussies in New Orleans, day 4.

We had quite a chat on this forum about N.O. before we went, thought I'd update how we are faring.
Absolutely loving it! We had 2 days in an airbnb at Arabi, outer suburb, no tourists. Lots of walking around the neighbourhood, chatting to the locals, walked to the Mississippi.
We then caught a local bus to Fauberg Marigny, staying in a great guest house that's 160 years old, water knee deep in Katrina.
This place is perfect, beautifully furnished in French and Oriental, we have our own little balcony, and it's reasonably priced. It's a 15 minute walk to the French Market, street car etc. It's the Royal Guest House, I recommend it.
Bourbon Street is a big mess. They are laying pipes under the road, so all dug up and cordoned off, narrow walkway.
The businesses along those blocks must be doing it tough.
Today we paid $3 each and rode the streetcars around the city for a look. Interesting to see. Glad we didn't book in to one of the big impersonal hotels downtown.
We've felt completely safe, everyone is friendly, we walked at night to our guest house, after doing the Bourbon Street thing...
There are homeless people of course, a few zonked out on drugs yelling and swearing but that's a world wide sad problem.
Today, we're going on a swamp tour, to Honey Island. I've always wanted to see the bayous. Dream coming true.
In all, love the vibe of New Orleans, and
the people are great.
2 more nights then Carnival cruise for 5 nights. Fun times for these two old bods.
P.s...the guy in the photo owned the cafe we ate in. We were the only Australians he'd ever had and wanted a pic. He couldn't believe we didn't know what grits are.
Pps..We are average height, he was huge.

Sounds good. By the way, no one who isn't from the south knows what grits are.

Oh..so grits are just a southern thing? I guess I've always heard about vittels and grits from cowboy movies and maybe "The Beverley Hillbillies". (Sorry Southerners)

Glad you are enjoying your stay. My favorite vacations in the U.S. have always been down South. Strange juxtapositions sometimes, but that is part of the charm, and of course the people are incredibly friendly. Every waitress would call me 'honey'.
