What settings do I use to take pictures of moving objects?
I am about 100 feet or so away from racing boats moving at 40 mph or so
some farther
I get blurring with background in focus
bought this camera as point and shoot
not a big settings guy
Thanks

Try panning with the moving boat making sure your focus point is on the subject.
It would help to see an example with store original selected.

Are you panning as you press the shutter? If you do this correctly, boats should be sharp, background blurred.

You would be much better off using a DSLR to do this. Instant (or almost instant) shutter response when you trip the shutter and a long lens will allow you to get in close for the shots and will make it a lot easier for you to pan with the moving boat as you trip the shutter.

Capturing racing boats with a "point & shoot" set on Automatic, may be a bit difficult. If you can just change a setting or two it will be helpful. Try setting the top dial to SCN and when "Scene Selection" appears on your camera's screen, press the main selector button on the rear of the camera. Then you can rotate the rear control dial to "Sports Action" and press the main button on the rear of the camera, again. That will instruct your RX100 to increase the shutter speed and the ISO setting.

It's may not be the ultimate answer, but it'll increase your chances of getting the picture you want.

I shoot jet boats on the river with an RX100III and have never felt a need for a DSLR.

Eventually, you might get comfortable with setting the top dial on "S" and setting a higher shutter speed (like a 1/500th or 1/1000th of a second), and letting the camera choose the aperture and the ISO settings. But, try the "Sports" setting first.
