I'm thinking of purchasing a Sony Alpha a6000 or an a6500.

If any of you have experience with either of these cameras, would you care to share your opinions? This would be my main camera, and I shoot mostly landscape-type photos, along with a smattering of whatever comes along.

Thanks in advance for your offerings.

I bought an a6000 as a second camera. This way my wife had a camera. I use it as well. She leaves it in full auto. I use full manual for my setup. It’s a great camera especially for the cost. My main camera is the Nikon D500.

My son is saving to buy the a6600. He wants it mainly for 4K Video and built in image stabilizer.

Do you plan to capture a lot of video? If so go for the a6500.

Another option is the A6300. 4K Video but no built in stabilizing.

a6000 is a great camera and under $600.

I bought the a6000 on sale for $325 when the 6100 came out and am very pleased with it. I use it with the kit lens.

Many have listed the good points of the a6000 so I won't repeat. I'll just say I love mine! Nice and light. Great results. I use my Nikon lenses and a couple of Super Takumar lenses in addition to the standard lens.

I bought an A6000 with standard lens a few months ago, and I love it. It cost about $550 for body and lens, compared with a lot more for other A series. While I was shooting this weekend, I saw two other people with them.

Here are links to two good videos. I'm sure at least one of them is free to watch.

If you are a normal shooter using standard lenses all good; however the 6000 and 6300 have known issues with horizontal banding across the sensor which show up on close inspection in extreme lighting situations or with aggressive post processing. I think it has something to do with sacrifices to get quick readout of the sensor. I don’t know about the a6500.

I returned mine due to this issue and bought a used NEX-7, which has no banding issues.

I had the a6000 with 2 kit lenses. I am a Nikon shooter with 2 full frame cameras & a variety of lenses. I decided to sell the a6000 and upgraded to the a6500 with the 10-16 f4 and the 16-70 f4. I then got the 70-200 f4 used. I love this camera, love all the lenses but especially love the 70-200. It is such a sharp lens, and I get great results. While I am not ready to give up my Nikons, I love the Sony.

I have a A6300 and love it, primary travel camera and use both E & A-mount lenses with the appropriate adapter, great results. These were taken in Rome as we were exiting the Vatican Museum with the 6300 and a Sony FE 10-18mm F4 OSS, JPEg files....I've used the A6300 with a Sony SAL 70-400 (A-mount) with adapter and have gotten excellent results. Sony is introducing more & more E-Mount lenses to keep up with the demand for Mirror-less. Enjoy 😎

This may help you make up your mind. I am including the spreadsheet I did for my a6500, but it is for a personal license and not to be distributed for sale or commercially. You can see that there are many options built in.

A number of months ago my wife and I were walking in Clearwater Beach Florida. A group of hip hop kids stopped me asking if my camera was the Sony a6000. They were so interested in the camera. I let the one asking the questions take a few images. We enjoyed the experience. It’s a great camera.

I admit total ignorance about the Sony models, Jaymatt, but why are you omitting the popular a6300? /Ralph

I'm not considering the a6300 because it doesn't have internal stabilization, and I shoot mostly hand-held.

Do you have large hands or arthritis in your fingers? I loved my A6000, but the grip caused my hands to freeze up after carrying it for a while. I have no experience with the A6500.

I don't, so that shouldn't be a problem for me.

Another thought, particularly for landscape photography: don't forget that the a6xxx's are crop factors which means the effective focal length of the lenses are ~1.5x. So 16mm on the on these bodies is equivalent to 24mm on a full frame, and an 18mm is equivalent to a 27mm. Hence the reason I went for the 10-18, which gives me an effective 15-27mm lens, and the extra couple of mm less at the low end really make a difference.

I have a crop sensor now, so I'm used to that.

I was looking at these when I decided to go mirrorless, and I borrowed an Alpha ar7 from a co worker. If you like landscapes, I would at least consider this one over the a6000 or a6500.

FWIW, I decided not to go FF and fell in love with the Fuji for its retro design. Not trying to sway you from Sony....Happy hunting....

Thanks for the information, but the AR7 is out of my price range; hence the a6000-6500 choices.
