A Glimpse at life in Cuba

My husband and I had the opportunity to visit Cuba for four days in June, just before new travel guidelines were initiated. Now with the additional changes, I'm thankful that we went when we could. It was the most educational . . . but also most depressing trip I've ever taken. Beautiful country, wonderful people but poverty like we can only imagine. Only the government buildings have been maintained. There is approximately 1 car for every 10 families.

Lovely. It is too bad that there are some who are hell bent on reigniting the Cold War for votes in Miami.

A great set of photos, Sally. Life outside of the resorts --- sadly, it's a part of Cuba that most tourists don't care to see. Well done, and thanks for sharing.

Miami? Heck, don't you know it's Florida that elects our president? It's all the retirees that migrated there from NYC (Baby Bush demonstrated this first) and we all know that is the center of the universe. Not to mention all the effect on the common man's life President Buffoon has. C'mon man, school up!

Thanks. I really wish everyone could see communism in action. It would remind us of how great we have it!

Thanks. It'd do more for our country if people could see the contrast for themselves.

I'm not a resort person . . .the joy of traveling is discovering other ways of life . . .boy, was this an experience! Thanks for your comment.

Being Canadian seems to be to my advantage when visiting Fidel's and Che's old haunts. Yes most of the Cubans are living in very impoverished conditions. Those who get to work in the resorts are carded to gain access to work but must always be accounted for on a daily basis. One such resort, located on the north shore just 90 miles from Florida, just hired 2 more beach rakers. They work at night collecting all the flotsam and jetsam that has drifted from Florida sources. 2 more were needed just to keep up so the beaches will continue to be pristine every morning. Now that is sad for sure.

Nice shots. That must have been a long time ago, judging by the cars. : )

It's a wonderful series....i feel for people who have to live like that. Maybe some of our football players can see this and realize how good we have it here.
