Ken says that all most people (common folk, not professionals) really need is a camera that has 3-6 megapixels for their photos. Do you agree with this? Why or why not? Also, for my own understanding of these kinds of things, if I am considering purchasing either a Nikon D5100 or the new D3200, does the D3200 have any advantage since it has 24 megapixels as compared to the 16 in the D5100? In other words, what differences would I notice in my photos between the two? If you can provide a photo of a lower pixel camera and a higher one to show any differences, that would be appreciated.

I disagree completely...no body needs a camera, period. The so-called "need" is actually a desire to cling to occasions that bring pleasurable memories to the front of the mind. That's all commie BS. Anyone who has a camera is a dirty red commie especially anyone who buys a camera made in Asia where all the commies are.

13"x20" vs 11"x16" prints straight out of the camera, at 300 dpi.

I guess it would be What do you call common folks?

if your one that just takes snap shots, I wont disagree. if your like most people here and take your a little more serious I disagree.

I have seen some amazing pictures come out of a 3 meg camera.

I think Ken is right. Most of us commoners rarely print larger than 8x10 or 11x14. A 6 megapixel camera will give you a 16x20 quality print.
I love large megapixels too and it does give you the advantage of being able to crop and still have plenty of detail.
Guess the easiest way to tell is answer the question: How many large prints have you made this year?

I have a D70 (6mp) and a D90 (12mp), and the difference isn't in the MP count, it is in the ISO noise. My daughter and I use them together, we usually can't tell the difference unless we look at the metadata.
I have printed 20x30 often from the D70, and printed a billboard from the D90, 20x30 is the dividing line for me.

For a print straight out of the camera then sure, but my guess is most of us crop and some of us more liberally than others. The more you crop, the more you 'zoom' so you may need a little more, 20+ though, I'm not always sure.

RixPix, your idiotic response and accompanying halfwitted, moronic attitude are duly noted....and NOT appreciated. If this is the best you can do, go waste your time on some other photography blog.....like one where kids who watch Romper Room wouldn't understand your ramblings either but would LAUGH nonetheless!

Rix, As BuckeyBilly said so well, individuality and sarcasm are not appreciated here. Some of the old folks just can't handle it.

Hot Texas, this blog is for ANYONE interested in photography. I'm a beginning photograher who has time for maybe one or two days of shooting per week. I fully expect to become better with time, but there's the rub: it's going to take time. However, I joined this sight to gather as much info as possible from photographers who are beyond the beginning stage in order to shorten the days of inexperience. So, that's why I referred to some people as being "common folk." There are more of this type of individual on UHH than what you think!

Bigdaver, I understand about noise being a factor. But the cameras I referred to are so similar in almost every respect that the noise factor should be practically the same on each. Therefore, what difference would I notice in photo quality between identical photos taken with each camera? In other words, would 24 mp get me a clearer, more detailed shot than the 16mp, all other things being equal?

I had a 2.1 megapixel Olympus C2100-UZ with a 10X zoom that took amazingly good pictures until it drowned. My Panasonic Lumix FZ-20 (5 megapixels) also took very good photos. Still does, it's just that my daughter is taking them. Now I'm using a Nikon D5000 (12 MP). For me, the issue would be the ability to crop and still have enough pixels for a high quality print. I think either camera would give you all the pixels you need to crop creatively, except in extreme situations.

For quite a while, i read that 5 megapixels was all you needed for basic photography.

Check the reviews, e.g., dpreview.com. And, as someone is sure to recommend, see if you can handle both cameras in a store.

Of course he's right, but given the choice of a 16MP camera or a 20MP, I'd take the 20MP. More is better, right? David Pogue did a test with three identical photos enlarged to 16X24" at resolutions of 13, 8, and 5. They looked virtually identical.

It's like horsepower in a car. There's enough, and there's more than enough.
