More accurate to say half the people you know are below the median.
But even that may not be true, depends on who you know and hang around with. The faculty lounge or Silicon Valley break room is likely to be full of a bunch of above median people and a drunk holding tank on the wrong side of the tracks is likely to be full of below median people.
