In the Mexico City airport you will have take out both camera and lends going through security, as well as computers, ipads, cel phones. You won't have to take off your shoes.

I had the same sort of thing in Dublin last year, returning to the US from the UK. I went through the normal security checks before boarding my plane at the source, but when I got to Dublin - without ever leaving the 'secured' side of the airport, I had to go through the full security process - shoes off, etc., plus filling out some form on a computer for which there were *huge* lines... When I asked one of the nice people who were conducting the search why this was necessary, since I had already cleared security once, I was told that it was to make things quicker and easier when I arrived at the destination! Basically, it was "this is how we do it, so shut up and get back in line...".

It's kind of a preflight customs, if your not stopped from travelling before you get on the plane you shouldn't be stopped on the US side.

That was the idea, then Trump implemented a travel ban which was in conflict with local law which messed things up. I have no idea how it's working now or if it works at all, I have no interest in travelling to the USA.

Went to Ireland in August with all my equipment as carry on without any issues. Since I have TSA pre, did not even have to open the camera backpack.

Carry on and check baggage approved for camera, monopod, tripod, lens, film, selfie stick. I would NEVER check my gear. Pack accordingly, always check in with TSA day of travel, and check in with the airline you will be taking the day of travel (they have individual rules and guidelines). Biggest issue is lithium batteries. Have fun!

Agree with checking TSA.

Just traveled to Ghana and back within last two weeks.

No issues in either direction.
Outbound that they did examine my bag, but no issues.

The same might be said for any "support" personnel. I would go to their site, as pointed to by LoneRangeFinder read and print the pertinent information. Should there be any questions at security, you can at least show the information that you based your packing on, rather than just saying, "but Mary Doe of the TSA said this was OK".

Good idea and you should do it but you still cant count on it.

Checking in business class on Aeromexico and had actually SHOW the ticketing agent the Aeromexico website that had what weight I was allowed to carryon. He stilll was not sure. The agent next to him leaned over and told him to zip it and process me.

You may get a TSA agent with a chip on his shoulder. Your paperwork may not be good enough :-)

Yes, you don't want to do any searches online and check with TSA and your airline. Rely on the Hogg.

What's the point of having a forum for asking questions to get answers when I am told I should have used Google or some other source.?

Since you will receive a wide variety of opinions on the Hog, some informed, some less so. The best source is the TSA and your airline. Even then, random searches may occur, whether you have TSA pre or not. The best course is to help them do their job, whether or not you may feel it is excessive.

From my own perspective, being blown out of the sky is a much bigger infringement of my rights than any other security procedure. On the other hand these guys have a job to do, and frequently have a sense of humor if you work with them.

I really liked this sign in the TSA area at Milwaukee airport!

Kind of a snooty answer for simple question.

I traveled from Houston to Germany through Amsterdam two and a half weeks ago. I carry a full frame body and two lenses in a thin cloth backpack that I put inside my normal backpack. I go through the pre-check line and on occasion in the US my complete backpack makes it through without further inspection. But often it did not, so I now routinely pull the small backpack out of my full backpack and put it on the belt. That reduces the chances of further delays of re-inspections. There is no problem carrying on cameras and lenses. I returned about a week ago from Germany with no problems carrying on a camera and lenses; however, when leaving Europe to the US or transferring planes in Europe I always had to take out the camera and lenses and put them in a bin. Again, no restrictions, just inspections. Also when returning to the US and transferring planes, the odds are that cameras and lenses must be placed in bins like laptops, but no restrictions on them, just inspections.

I flew from Houston to Salt Lake City two days ago and had no problems or questions about my camera equipment carry on. The item that caused the most concern was my small umbrella in my backpack, but after a thorough hand inspection by TSA, they let it through.

My strategy when traveling in Europe is based on the number of days away; seven or less I can make it with a carry on suitcase and my backpack because I go straight to security where the risk of checking weight is very low. If I will be away longer than 7 days, I need to check a bag in addition to my carry on suitcase. So I have to check in at the counter with an agent where the risks of weighing my carry on are high. In those situations, I put a few items in a vest to meet the weight requirements. After checking my bag and going through security, I return the vest items to my backpack and put the vest in my carry on suitcase. Even making transfers in Europe the carry on won't be weighed again.

Went to Korea last month and didn't have any issue going or coming back. Interestingly, although not photo related, I sailed through the metal detector at Incheon Airport even though I have an artificial hip made of titanium.

Check their website.

Why bother? Even if you print regulations and/or procedures from the website and show them at the airport, you’ll be, at best, ignored. Try it at SFO and they’ll put you through the wringer; I guarantee you’ll miss your flight.

Yet I got stopped at SMF for two pieces of birdshot in my left knee and my wife was treated like Johnny Jihad because of an artificial hip. My son, who is a LEO (modern nomenclature from TV), was escorting a prisoner from SMF to LAX had to, of course, have his duty weapon “secured” during the flight and they wanted his badge/ID because of the pin on his badge; they didn’t get it! They also somehow missed the compact 9mm strapped to his left ankle!!!

Flying in the US I always tell them I have an artificial hip and they send me through the other machine that you stand in with your arms over your head (whatever it is called) but they didn't have one of them in Korea. I told the guy I have an artificial hip and he just shrugged and sent me through the metal detector. I was shocked when it didn't go off, but happy.
