Here are some photos all taken in national parks. I'm going to enter them in a contest sponsored by the NPRF. I know that the odds of winning are pretty small, but as they say,you won't win if you don't play.

So, i would like all you experts, especially those shaving experience with contests and judges to critique these shots.I don't want the standard "nice series" type compliments. if there are problems let me know please.

For me, the horse is not good enough to enter a contest with. The remaining ones seem to have a hazy quality in the landscape which I don't care for. The exception is South Dakota Badlands which I really like.

As a qualified photo competition judge, the only one that has a chance is South Dakota Badlands, the second image. The other images have issues with exposure, impact, color and composition. Good luck. If you win Dave with the second image you owe me a cup of coffee.

All excellent......I liked how the cloud over Devil's tower kinda looked like a halo!

On the first one, since the Devil's Tower is the main subject, I think you need to make the tower itself stand out more from the background, perhaps by lightening the tower and darkening the foreground a bit. Also, maybe crop out the grass at the bottom.

On the second one, crop just a small bit off the bottom, then convert to b/w and do lots of burning and dodging to get some contrast and drama in the image.

On the third one, it's got some good color but crop some off the top so the sky makes only about 1/3 of the image.

For the horse, crop quite a bit off the left side, enough to hide most of the bush on the bottom left.

On the last one, again crop the sky so that it is only about 1/3 of the image.

Good luck!!

If it isn't too much trouble, could you explain a little about what you mean, (exposure, Impact, color and composition) . Apparently there are standards that must be a little less subjective than 'looks good to me'. Do all judges follow similar standards - I realize that each has their own preferences, but can a lot of hotos be discarded by all from the get go?

Try Lightroom's DeHaze slider on all of them.

I used affinity dehaze tool, but these shots were taken when the smoke from Montana was fairly thick.

Shot #1 has a lot of noise and Devil's Tower is too hazy or smoke caused the haze. The tower should stand out with detail so you can see the crevices running up the side and warmed up since the sun is shining on the side.
Shot #2 I would bring out more color in the rock layers in the front of your shot.
Shot #3 Again a lot of noise is causing the detail to be diminished and the photo needs to be straightened. There are some strange dark sky blue lines along the mountains where they meet the sky.
Shot #4 is just not sharp and has a dull tone to it.
Shot #5 Not sharp and a lot of noise. Once again, the colors in the rock layers should be used to strengthen your landscape.
Hope this helps but it is just my opinion.

Is it me, or is there a tilt? Down to the left and up to the right.

Nice set. # 1 & 2 have spots in the upper left, clean sensor or take out with Affinity Photo. I think it is the 3rd that needs to have the horizon leveled some.
