For those interested (as I am) in the next version of the Nikon DF, below is the text from the 9/22 Daily Camera News which gives some hints:
"Nikon DF2 camera is in the works and not coming soon

The Nikon DF2 camera is rumored to be in the works and not coming soon in near future.
Chinese website Xitek has posted an interview with Tetsuro Goto from Nikon. The article includes some serious talks about Df successor and the future Nikon full-frame mirrorless cameras.
When we look at the notes from this interview, Nikon is actively working on the Df successor which will be called DF2. In the interview, it is stated that the users who follow this series will have to wait more. Until this time they can buy the existing DF without thinking. Here are some notes from this interview about the upcoming Nikon Df2 camera.
Nikon DF2 camera is in development
Nikon DF2 camera will use a new sensor and advanced AF system. For the sensor resolution it is claimed that the Japanese company could use either the Nikon D5 or D850 sensor in upcoming model. There will be a lot of improvements over the original DF. The body design of the Nikon DF2 camera will also be much thinner and smaller.
The Nikon DF2 announcement has been rumored for summer of 2017 for the company’s 100th anniversary. Instead the company ınveiled and focused on the Nikon D850 announcement.
DF2 Notes from the interview
Nikon Df2 is in developing
Df 2 will be much thinner and smaller
Df 2 will have a lot of improvement than original Df
There could be two version of Df successor, one use D5 sensor, the other use D850 sensor
Df 2 is not near, so just buy Df if you need.
These are the latest information about the Nikon Df2 camera. At the moment we can speculate the retro-styled full-frame camera is scheduled to be announced in 2018. Stay tuned with us for more information.

William, there's two important words in this post and one overall theme. One of the words is hints. The other is rumored. It's probably best to wait until Nikon makes an official press release until getting all worked up about some, as we in the computer trade refer to it as, vaporware.

I would definitely be interested in what a Df2 might have to offer, but rumors don't do it for me. Remember, the Df2 was rumored to be released as part of Nikon's 100th anniversary last July.
My highly-uneducated guess is that Nikon is doing a balancing act. On one hand, even if the DF2 is more near readiness for introduction than this rumor indicates, they wouldn't introduce it too soon for fear of cannibalizing sales of new D850. On other hand, they might want to tantalize those considering a switch to other brands or mirrorless by dangling hints of a newer, better, smaller DF. In a nirvana scenario, they'll be able to pull off what Leica did with their smaller M10 -- maybe something the size of the FM series?

If there was a smaller, better Df2, I would jump all over it.

A bigger, more feature-bloated version of the Df is more likely I think.

We'll just have to wait a see what, if anything, happens.
Putting a better sensor and better AF is easy and is to be expected. Making the camera lighter isn't needed in fact making it heavier is better. Making the camera smaller is something I really want but it has to be a DSLR and not a mirrorless. Nobody has ever made a FF DSLR smaller than the DF yet. So I must wait and see. Otherwise no other features can be added that I want. Taking away features is what I want but I wouldn't think Nikon dare to do that.

Expected sales of the Df has been disappointing. Although the Df has the same guts as the D4, it is a NITCH camera. It was designed for those like me who loved the look and feel of OLDER NIKON FILM CAMERA'S. I doubt Nikon will come out with a successor until the D5 has made it's initial sales run. I believe you will see the D5s before you see a Df2, if ever.

I actually don't think there is a Df2. I think those thinking about the Df2 are those who wanted the Df a mirrorless.

I've tried mirrorless and didn't care for the two I tried, mainly because of the EVF and shutter lag. What I would like to see in a Df2 would be an updated processor, and AF system.
Quit listening to and worrying about rumors. Not very interesting.

I am thinking about a Df2; and I never wanted a mirrorless.

Very interesting. I do like the retro look of the current DF. Wish Canon would do a specialty model of a similar look and with a 5DSR type of super high res sensor. They could call it the DF-1
