New York Fall Color Tour

I'm interested in taking in the fall color in New York in October. Currently looking at the area around Saratoga Springs and then moving westward to the Letchworth State Park area, but am open to just about anything. I would appreciate any information having to do with expected peak color times in those areas
as well as any suggestions for specific places in those or other areas. I know predicting peak color is a very inexact science, but I'm getting some very conflicting information on some of the sites I've visited.

I would move to the area around Manchester Vt and east and also Bennington to Brattleboro.

Finger Lakes wine country is gorgeous, as is the lower Adirondacks, Lake George, and southern VT around Bennington. Early October (first two weeks) is better than later in the month.

I was in Saratoga Springs a few days ago. Don't wait too long! That's about two hours north of me, and there's much more color there. Below is a good interactive map, but it seems to be running "fast." We have hardly any color here. It usually peaks around the middle of October.

I love the Genesee River Gorge area in the fall, so by all means go to Letchworth SP. Remember that fall comes early up on the Tug Hill. The last time I was there this late, most of the leaves were Peak-Past Peak. But the waterfalls in the Finger Lakes are pretty special when the leaves turn, so keep that in mind, too.

Thank you all for the responses and helpful links. I agree with Jerry's comment that the fall foliage map seems to be running a bit fast. That's one of the issues I was referring to when I said that I'm getting conflicting information. Hopefully we won't be getting to the region too late.

You did not state how long you will be in the area. There are lots of places to go and enjoy. I'm in southwestern Vermont, near Bennington, and there is not much color here, but it is beginning. Higher elevations are farther along because they get colder nights. Best way to get an idea of how the foliage is progressing might be to speak to someone in that area. If you are making reservations for places to stay, ask the people who run things there. A chamber of commerce along the way is another possibility.

Saratoga Springs is a nice town, and during end of July - first couple of days of September, everything revolves around the thoroughbred racing. Right now there may still be horses in training there. Lots of thoroughbred breeding farms in the area, as well. The scenery is good, especially with fall colors.

Going to Letchworth State Park sounds like an excellent destination. Plenty to see there! The quickest way to get there is to go on the interstate, I-90, but if you really want to see some pretty countryside, take a more southerly route. That will take you through Ithaca, and around the southern end of the Finger Lakes. This is where the wine country is located. There are some interstates in that area, but if you plan carefully you can avoid as much of that as you want [and have time for].

Problem with a trip to the northeast, there is a LOT to see and MANY great places to go. It is best to limit yourself so you have time to enjoy each destination. And to make a few unplanned side trips! You can find out a lot of information on the internet, some of it is mostly advertisements, but a lot is put out by the state. Just have to wade through it!

Thank you. I've settled on the Finger Lakes region with a stop at Letchworth State Park on the way back to Michigan. Fingers crossed to hit peak in at least one of those areas.

Good choice. Be sure to bring home some wine.
