I have been trying to photograph a Barred Owl for years. They are nocturnal and quite elusive. Anytime I would see one I wouldnt have my camera or I would have my camera and not see them. Two nights ago I got my chance. It was almost completely dark when I took these so you will have to forgive the focus and digital noise.
nice shots anyway.
Actually, Barred is one of those owls that is opportunistic and will hunt day or night. They will also vocalize day or night.
I live in MA and have seen/photographed them many times. Mostly i have stumbled on them. Really hard to hunt them down even when they are calling. Keep looking!
Congratulations! Well done! I have only seen them in early April, while resting/perching on a limb in thick hardwoods. It took me over 60 years to do it. They will perch in a tree in daylight, but seeing one is purely accidental due to their natural camouflage. The only reason I was able to see one is because I was lucky enough to see one flying from one limb to another before the leaves came out. This was at about 5 pm, so you may want to sit quietly in the area where you saw this one. They don't travel too far from their roosting area.
