On my most recent trip to Europe, I took 5 lenses, a full frame and a cropped sensor camera. I then decided what gear to carry each day depending on what we were doing. I locked the rest of the gear in my motel room safe. Many would criticize taking this much stuff but playing with my cameras is part of the vacation for me. I didn't carry a lot of stuff each day, as I wanted to just enjoy things too and not always be in the camera gear. Still, I was happy to have choices! To each their own. Good luck choosing your lens and happy travels

I am traveling to Italy next month and getting my gear in order. I am looking for a wide angle lens for landscapes to complement an EF 24-70 II USM, an EF 70-200 2.8L IS II USM, an EF 100-400 4.5-5.6 IS II USM. What are your recommendations? I'm also undecided as to taking the 100-400. Your thoughts.
Many thanks, Denny

I like the 10-18mm on my T4i and T1i, if that helps you, carrying it with my 17-70 this weekend, Bob.

Get a 24mm prime lens and let yourself be the zoom. your pictures will be better for it.

leave the 100-400 home. 24 mm is wide enough. save your money and your back!

Last year we went to Venice , Florence, Verona, and Rome.
I took my Nikon 55-300 and 17 -55 lens. I used the 17-55 more than 90% of the time. If you have it, take a very fast wide angle prime as most of the museums and churches will let you shoot, but not with a flash. If I was doing it again I would take the 17-55 and a wide angle prime with a f/1.2-1.8 range for the low light situations and leave the longer zoom at home. Hope this helps and have fun.

A small request. Please use quote reply and be specific about what you are thanking people for. Alternatively make a single response thanking everybody, not miltiple unspecified comments. The gesture is appreciated, but adds no value.

As for lenses, unless you have vast amounts of spare are money and are planning on travelling with a couple of pack donkeys, use an APS-C body if you have one for wide angle shots and get the EF-S 10-18 mm.

You will find that or it or a more expensive FF equivalent immensly valuable in Italy.

Finally, ultra-wide lenses require a different way of thinking about image composition, distortion, and so forth to get good results. Get one, and learn how to use it before you travel.

I discovered for me the Pentax 50mm f1.8 to be a great addition. It is inexpensive, small, light and extremely sharp even if it has a plastic flange. It is a welcome addition for low light conditions in old churches and does not add much weight to the camera bag.
