Read "Dereliction of Duty: Johnson, McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam." [H. R. McMaster] It is an acclaimed, well researched and well documented book. It discloses the inside story of the politics behind decisions made by Kennedy and Johnson, using now declassified official records and memoirs of the senior officials reporting to them.

Yes Quinn do a little research.

Watch the series just to check out historical inaccuracies and to see how censored it might be. Keep in mind he ( Burns ) could not put every detail in there or it would be 180 hours instead of 18 .

I have watched the first three and anxiously await the remaining episodes. I was a young man during the "Vietnam Era" and believe that we need to be reminded of what war demands of its participants. That era and the war itself is I.M.H.O. the root cause of the current distrusst of the government.

I've watched the first 3 episodes and will watch the remaining 15. I find it very interesting and very well written and filmed. I'm 71 now and spent 3 years as a Navy Ens/Ltjg/Lt doing shore duty in Washington, D.C. I still remember well the protests at American University (which I saw in person) and Kent State, of course. Fortunately, I never went to Viet Nam, but know a number of guys who did; my hat's off to them.

I find, without trying to sound maudlin, that the footage is a brutal reminder and lesson to all that all govt.'s are to be treated with skepticism. WWI, with the brutality and human sacrifice, served to cure Great Britain yyyyof it's naivete and costs that "patriotism" demanded. I believe the same lessons have been learned by U.S. citizens. I think Ken Burn's series helps to keep skepticism of govt. fresh.

krl & Leo Perez, That what I am talking about, get more light on what was going on. The only way is for people open up and talk, I known that is hard to do for some people to do.

On the PBS "Viet Nam" Watch and weep! We are being fed the same BS now about Afghanistan and the other 'stans. There probably hasn't been a genuinely honest president since Truman though Eisenhower, to his credit, did warn us, to no avail, about the "military-industrial complex". If Russia could not "win" in Afghanistan what makes our great powers that be think what we can. Two adages that seem to be forgotten: Do not invade Russia (read any history of Napolean or Hitler); Do not get into a land war in Asia (watch "Viet Nam".

SO VERY TRUE. We do not read history, so off to the big sand box in Afghanistan we go.

Take to heart anything you see on PBS in the area of History, especially. You cannot get any more liberal than PBS, so I'm not surprised if they not only leave out a lot but also make quite a bit up to soot their agenda.

Every war or so called police action has it's dirt pile, wwII has plenty but one really stands out, the book Victims of Yalta is about 3 million Russians who were forcibly returned to Russia, and to their deaths, by Great Britain and the USA.

The real problem is that I think we still need to learn from history and remember the lessons. Those who will not are doomed to repeat it, over and over and over.

If you want to dirt on WWII, How about the USA and English knowing about the death camps, and did none to stop them. How did USA & England known, their were flying over death camps every day and could see what was going on. And with US & England reading the Germans codes, Their known from day to day what was going on. True be known that at the end of war there only survives.
Sirlensalot, I confuse what you are writing about?

What do you think is going on in the world today? The way I see it is: stupid is as stupid does!
