In praise of Capture 1 (Sony)

Capture 1 Pro is a fairly pricey application but since I have Sony cameras I decided to try the Sony version which is "free".

I am fairly new to post processing so I have been trying many different applications including but not limited to: Lightroom, Darktable, Photos (Mac), Acdsee (sp?), Luminar, ON1 Resize, RawPhotoProcessor 64, XnConvert, Picassa, Pixlr, Sony's own ImageDateConverter, FastStoneViewer, ...

I only mention all that to support the idea that I'm inexperienced but not lacking in exposure

I probably would have skipped Phase One's Capture 1 if I had tried it earlier, but now that I have become at least a little familiar with the concepts and terminology of post processing, I have to say this is a terrific tool. I don't know if it's worth $300 for you non-Sony users, but it's definitely worth trying if you have any Sony images to work with. I looked at the table that compares the features of the Sony version to the purchases version and I have no reason to go further.

In addition to all the usual features of any high end editor, I particularly like the way it implements both the histogram and the curve tool.

For those of you who use the catalog features of such tools I have zero information. Sorry, but I don't use them so I can't comment on them. I prefer to stick to the native file system. One reason that may be obvious from the above is that I can avoid being a captive of any particular vendor or application.

It runs on both Mac and Windows, by the way.

My first run through post processing is always with my Sony proprietary program. It's simple and efficient. Many times I need go no further. Good program.

I like it too.
But it tends to hang or crash if the files are on a USB attached drive. I confirmed this with Sony. It applies to both Mac and Windows.

If I haven't made myself clear, Capture 1 goes a long way further with editing than the Sony proprietary program. One thing I especially like, though, with the Sony proprietary program is that you can show the various ways the picture would look as a JPG with the various picture styles that the camera provided.

For real speed in the first pass through my raw files, FastRawViewer is the absolute best and it can also pass the photo to many of the most popular editors, directly.

And for those who never got seduced into the idea of using catalogs by Lightroom, Capture One's sessions are a very natural way to work. There is no database confusion where your records can get lost.

I liked my free Sony version so much that I bought the full version to use with my Nikon raw files. I have never looked back.

I use captureone pro 10 not the Sony version with a Mac. All of my catalogs are on a G technologies hard drive connected via USB 3. I have no problems with the software. I purchased it inversion 8 when apple stopped supporting aperture. It is a very good program for RAW conversion, post processing, and organizing my over 30000 images.

Capture One Express for Sony is free. Capture One Pro 10 (for Sony) - EUR/USD 50 .Nothing will beat this program for raw conversions of landscapes IMO.
