Got up early this morning for my Sunday morning workout at the local Planet Fitness. happened to see a classic car show being organized in the parking lot, ranging from mid 1950s to early 1970s. What an unexpected treat. Lucky for me, I had my "glovebox" camera along, a Canon sx130is

Nice pics. Can't help but wonder what's under the hood of the 57.

As Dan Seals puts it in the song "My Old Yellow Car" ...an American boy with his hands on the wheel
of a dream that was made of American steel
...

Mine was a 54 Buick Century with a 55 Roadmaster V-8. Three toned top to bottom Cream, Light Blue, Mid/Dark Blue.
25 minutes to do the 26 miles from Grandma's farm to the college my freshman and sophomore years on twisty two lane county blacktop roads, last 3 miles on a state highway with 2 miles of it the only long straight away of the trip.
I was the overly cautious driver among my friends, tells you why NASCAR and the South go together.

All the vintage cars had style, that seems to be lost in todays world where people want to do away with the internal combustion engine...

Thats $26k or so today using the CPI calculator. I bought a new Mustang V8 2+2 fastback in 1966 for $2600 ($21k today) and a new BRG Jag XKE roadster in 1969 for $5900 (about $41k today). Should have kept them both but... My dad had a black/white 1957 Chevy - another should of kept.

The sadness is that we knew we would someday wish we had not parted with things like your toys or my '38 Pontiac Coupe, '63 Stingray, '79 L82,...I may hang onto my Z3 Bima though the least valuable of the bunch.

You are so right, IMHO, the Nascar tradition goes back to the days of the Moonshiners, when outrunning the long arm of the law was "business as usual" California, or course donated its share of influence to the car culture of the 1950s and 1950s. Just think back to the songs of the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. Considering how poor those cars handled at anything other than a straight line, with their drum brakes, solid axles, leaf spring suspensions, and bias ply tires, it is no wonder that "Dead Man's Curve" became a hit. IMHO, drag racing evolved because it was safer to run those beasts in a straight line.

And to all those "tree huggers" I say, I will give up my gasoline powered car when they pry my cold dead fingers from around the steering wheel

I owned a new 1968 Mustang convertible and about 25 yeas later had the chance to borrow a very similar, like new '68 for a drive from the Boston area to Hartford. Hadn't realized how bad the ride and handling really were.
