I plan on framing these two shots in the same frame, one above the other. They are 5X7 and I will be putting them in an 11X14 frame thus there will be 2 inches on either side and 1.5 inches above and below if I separate them by 1 inch. My question is which one goes best on the top? I am leaning towards the full plane.
This is part of an exhibit of a variety of my photos.
I may also do two separate 8X10s in 11X14 frames.

I agree with you... great shots!
Regarding framing/matting, when studying art in school, I was taught that the lower part of the mat should be wider than the top part. I would narrow the distance between the two pictures.
A good way to go to test it out would be to get some white paper the size of the matting (or tape paper together to get the right size), and place the pictures on it seeing what looks best to you. Anyway, that's what I'd do.

I have matted numerous pictures and also bought both pictures and artwork. In most cases the artists have framed their work with the same dimension above and below. I usually use the same even though I kind of agree with your art teacher. Sometimes I think it my be the subject that dictates how to go.
Great shots, or great shot?

Thanks, it was one shot of the plane flying over the soccer field when I was shooting one of my granddaughter's games.

I agree with you... and so much depends on personal preference. IMO, what it comes down to is what pleases us.
Whatever you decide to do, your pictures will look wonderful!

Thank you Cathy Ann. When I put my photos in the exhibit in the library for the month of October, I will put some version of each on Dropbox and provide a link to anyone who is interested in looking.

I certainly will be interested!

My wife is an artist and matts her watercolors with a slightly wider lower dimension but I do photos with equal. She's probably right but standard matts tend to be equal. In this case, whatever looks best.

Thanks. I think I will stick with equal. It makes it easier to cut the mats because it cuts down on the number of different dimensions.

You live in the Catskills, so have you ever eaten at the Hurley Mountain Inn?

Nice shots. Personally, I would choose just your top shot and add some nice clouds to make it more interesting. Otherwise, when matting, the top and bottom need to be the same dimensions as the sides, otherwise it will look goofy.
