Does anyone use the Focus Shifter device?

Someone recently gave me this brand new Focus Shifter. I've read the instructions and I know how to mount in on a lens. It allows the photographer to shift between two focus positions. I can see that it could be useful when shooting video. I don't see that it would be useful for still photography. Have any hoggers used this?

I have to admit I've never heard of a focus shifter attachment. Sony has an app that does focus stacking in camera. It takes three shots while shifting the focus between each and then stacks them in camera. I have only experimented with it for a couple of macro shots. It meets my focus shifting needs.

I made a crude one for doing video. Used it once for a project. Not sure where it is anymore.

I just went on YouTube and you are correct it is for Video not still. It isn't that great of quality. You might have to mount the indexing boards to your zoom ring. If that ring is moved now your focus is now out of the original setting. Being only held on by rubber bands and the indexing plates have such a small footprint it appears to me that a bump could also knock it apart or out of adjustment. I never seen one before or know anyone using one. Never know it might just work (or not)

It could be useful for shooting images for focus stacking.
The longer focus control would allow for smaller, more precise changes in the focus point.

Yes, I've seen that done with video. If you're shooting (stills) two subjects alternately, this would help to achieve fast focus. It would certainly enable you to focus and shoot quickly.

Maybe there is a reason someone gave it to you.

I think she won it in a photo contest. She didn't know how to use it.

You can either use the two clips as hard stops or draw your own reference marks on the marker board.
