Photo Sharing Question

A good friend asked this question and I was hoping that my UHH friends could help.

Got a photo question for you...what do you recommend for a photo sharing site? Years ago I used "Kodak Gallery" and really liked it; Shutterfly bought it and I've been using it but it keeps changing and not for the better. It is NOT intuitive and I'm ready to move on. Is Flickr better? We have been playing with Google photo but I'm not sure if that's any easier. I want something that will let me move photos around (rearrange their order), put in captions and then share the results with friends. Oh yeah, I don't want to pay for it either...any suggestions?

I've been using Microsoft OneDrive to share.
I'm not sure about re-arranging, but you could probably upload in a particular order.
The free version is limited to a certain amount of storage.

I'm currently using Google Drive to share. Easy and no-cost (at least so far).

Assuming you want people to view your photos online (not simply a shared storage site for files), I recommend Flickr. I've been using it for years. Many professional photographers use http://www.flickr.com. And, yes, it's free.

You might want to take a look at DropBox. It was designed to do what you describe. And, it's free up to 2Gb (maybe 5Gb, don't recall).

Flickr is free for 1TB and easy to use.

Do you mean "share" as in come and view my photos to the general public? Or, do you mean "share" as in here, let me send you a group of files that are too big to send as attachments to an email?

For the former, Flickr is an option that can be used for free, but has limitations on how much you can upload at once or per day from what I remember. Many post their pictures to Facebook allowing closer connections like friends and family to view. How you set the security settings controls whether the images are view-only or whether others can download their own copies.

Tools like OneDrive and Dell's DropBox allow sharing files where granting access to images on the cloud with these tools allows people to download or otherwise "take" copies of the files that might be beyond the level you intended to "share". The free versions also may be too limited as a long-term solution is you don't purchase a larger storage area.

Unless Dell just recently acquired them . . .

Dropbox is a file hosting service operated by American company Dropbox, Inc., headquartered in San Francisco, California, that offers cloud storage, file synchronization, personal cloud, and client software. Dropbox was founded in 2007, by MIT students Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi, as a startup company, with initial funding from seed accelerator Y Combinator.

It came up under Dell utilities on my laptop ... Must be a standard-loaded product rather than Dell owned. Switching from HP to Dell brought this to my attention so I seem to have guessed incorrectly rather than checking for myself.

You piqued my interest, and I went looking, for I never associated DropBox with Dell. But, yes, it's always on the new Dells.

I'm a google geek. All the apps and programs interface well. It's interesting but inconvenient that all my android phone pics automatically get posted to my google account. There's a setting so it only transfers images when connected to a wifi so no data is used. Particularly inconvenient when the phone is in my pocket and decides to take 77(to pick a number) pics of the inside of my pocket. Fortunately the delete function from the online storage is easy to use once you figure out how it works.

Picasa was better, until google incorporated it into google pics. Lost some functions like collages.

Depends on your camera, some manufacturers provide space too.

dropbox seems pretty good. Dont be scared by the fact "more space move up to business version"

You get plenty of space with the basic.

I use Microsoft foto manager for my basic store/edit /touch up.

Then move to dropbox for sends.

Used to be they would provide more space to store in if you got new members to join . They dont do that any more and I dont know why.

When I get a message and it says your dropbox is getting full buy more space, I simply move to an external hard drive (passport) and store there away from the dropbox account.

If someone comes back and ask for the set I just go to passport, move the set to dropbox, once they say they have them and saved them at their end I simply return the file to my passport.

on google foto, do you find it easy for the recipients to down/upload what you send them and do they find it easy to use once they have the file??

Sometimes the dropbox tells them they have to get my permission even though I sent them the file with ability to edit.

Not sure why DB does that. It did not use to but does now.
