Hey Everyone.
I shot this in California this last summer. It is not very good, but the best I could get.
Nikon D3300 with Tamron 16-300mm lens at 16mm. Shutter speed: 20 seconds. Aperture F/3.5 ISO: 3200.
Comments and critiques welcome.

Even at 20 sec you get star trails.
Can an equatorial mount with clock drive be far behind ??

I'd be happy with it.

I'd be happy with it too.
I see a wide angle f1.4 in your future.

Don't be too hard on yourself. It's a good start.

Thanks a lot. I really want to get a good editor like lightroom or photoshop, but I don't have the money for it yet. I have just been using the free google nik collection, which is not very good.

Look at GIMP. I haven't used, but have heard it's nearly everything as the pay-for software. Probably what is missing is commercial grade noise processing, something that would improve your great image here before making any equipment changes.

Given you're shooting with a D3300, look to see if a stand-alone copy of LR5.x (or LR6) fits your budget as this software includes support for RAW images from the D3300. RAW support is typically the deciding point on the version of Adobe software to go with if, if a monthly $10 subscription is beyond your needs or means. (The subscription model dynamically adds support for new cameras being released where the 'static' versions support all cameras up to the final creation date of the software ...)

Personally, I prefer Snickers. But seriously, that's a nice image, although you really aren't doing yourself any favors with an f3.5 lens (or, probably, one with such a wide zoom range). A small prime might be just the ticket.

I'd say that is pretty good! Where did you find such dark skies?

Yeah, I am going to get a prime lens soon. But for now, the Tamron 16-300mm is all I have.
