Lens Problem

My camera is a Canon Rebel T1i. The lens I had on the camera is EFS 18-55.

This camera and lens have been very good until I recently tried to take a picture and nothing happened. I tried another lens and there was no problem. I eventually found out that the lens focus was the problem.

If I changed the lens to manually focus, the camera could take pictures. Then I found out if I changed the focus by manually turning the lens focus out I could take the picture – but not the next picture.

Any ideas?

Your lens is probably on its way out. That model, the 18-55 is not worth repairing. Paying Canon to repair the lenses AF will cost almost as much as a new lens. I've had this same thing happen on more expensive lens. The repair was over $600. Time to get an 18-135 or 18-200 EFS lens.

I completely agree. The EF-S 18-135 IS STM lens came as a kit lens with my 7D MKII and I am extremely pleased with the IQ, and fast quiet auto focusing. It rarely leaves my 7D MKII as a walk around, and general purpose lens. As far as I'm concerned the OP simply can't go wrong with this superb lens by Canon.

How about checking the contacts on the lens. They may just need to be cleaned.

I shall do that before I order a new lens.

I don't think you will be disappointed. If you do get the lens, let us know what you think of it. IMO, it's a great Canon lens for the price.
Good luck!
