The costs/benefits of spending $5K on a camera are very subjective. I wouldn't because I spent a bundle on a D300 and lenses many years ago and usually print 8x10 and a few 12x15. I don't think a D850 would do anything for my photo skills. But we do own 2 Jaguars because we really enjoy driving them. Our Prius-driving friends (yes, we're liberals) find our cars appalling - I find their cars boring.
Sure would, with the usual caveat it would have to be some super gear, you know how to use it, and you are not depriving your children of food. Hell I spent $3,500 for he Canon 5dIII when it came out, and another grand for an L lens.
I may be in the minority here but I spent close to that on my GH5 and 2 lenses. I got it for a trip to Alaska this summer and am glad I did. Big upgrade from my Nikon D7000. I needed the 4K video and birding lens (200-800 mm equivalent). Good investment in my opinion.

How much did you pay combined for your claimed 10 cameras?
Not a one time purchase. That would be over time so the hit is not so great. If you are engaged in a "profit motive" as a business you could claim it as a business expense. Also if you had extra camera bodies this would replace you could determine the used value and donate them to a charity and take a tax write off as a charitable donation.

I love it!!! Your liberal friends would probably absolutely go insane at a drag race...

If money was no concern and if the camera would be a Hasselblad, then yes indeed!
I just spent over $7000. on a Leica M10. I would do it again. But I have also spent $12,000 on a double rifle. I would do that again too. Each of us has a certain amount of money coming in. Some spend $30,000 on a boat for fishing or water skiing. Of course they need a truck to pull it so there is maybe another $50,000 gone. I have a truck but have no interest in a boat. Some people take multiple cruises and don't bat an eye. Some people don't blink when buying a Cessna 185.
We each have our own interests and your interests, while very interesting to me, don't interest me enough to put money into it. I buy what I like when I can afford it. You should too.

If I was much more experienced and was sure I had L grade lenses, a fast computer with tons of storage, calibrated monitor, PP software, professional printer to take full advantage of what the camera can do, absolutely.
If I had all those things in place and my photography could possibly warrant it, I'd buy a Hasselblad that costs as much as a nice mid priced Crossover....as I was shopping for divorce lawyers. 🙄
Even if I was paid in dollars that would be nearly a whole year's income.
Spend that much on a camera? I can't even afford to spend that much on my wedding next year!
Not without winning the lottery.

How about the extra package on a van to include TV screens, or automatic doors. We ALL pick our places to spend money where we could go without.

I don't Take my camera in my pool. but I did take my Pentax K-10D and a Pentax 55-300 lens into a pool at LaCabana resort on Eagle beach to take this photo, The rock this guy is on was between the pool and inground hot tub area.
Nice shot! And only 10MP too, right?
(I have a K-110D (converted for IR only use) and a K-20D, and K-5)
Yes. If it added value to my work. An average weekend for me is 1 thousand plus pictures. Freelancer for newspapers and magazines. Primary is sports. Spent that much on 300 mm 2.8. Well worth the investment
