Yongnuo RF-603 II wireless remote flash question...

I bought these units as a remote trigger for my Canon 5DS R and MkIV with the intention of later using it for remote flash with my Canon Speedlight 550EX. I'm now on to that and I have got the flash firing remotely. However, it seems only to work in manual mode. When all is set up and switched on I don't see the usual flash icon in the viewfinder even though the flash will fire when the shutter is pressed. Additionally, the remote flash doesn't react to a change in the zoom on the lens. So am I to understand that with this setup I can't get ETTL flash, that there is no exposure communication between the camera and remote flash and so I must work in full manual - or have I missed something vital in the setup somewhere?

You are correct. Those transceivers are manual use only, no TTL.

Thanks very much. I can live with that and stop wasting time trying to get them to communicate!

You need a 622.

I don't need it. I can use what I have manually. I just wanted to be sure that TTL wasn't available on the 603. It would have been a bonus. But thank you for the info.

The 603 works fine for non TTL, especially useful with older flashes...

With the 622 you should be able to adjust the manual output of the flash from the transmitter on the camera.
No walking away from the subject to fiddle with the back of the flashes when they are in a softbox, up on a high stand, around the corner or outside a window.
That's a huge bonus in my book!

Thanks for that. If I read the specs correctly, however, my Speedlight 550EX is one of the old models which have to be set manually anyway using this system.

Ahhh.
I'm a from the "Dark Side" (Nikon) so not aware of that issue.
Good luck!

550 EX should support ETTL as either a master or a slave, with an ETTL system. Not with the Y 603, but possibly with the Y 622. It may be that the Y 622 doesn't support the 580 EX or 550 EX.

I use the Canon ST-E2, with 580 EX II and 580 EX. Works just fine, the 550 EX would fit right in. It's not the flash, it's the non ETTL or off brand triggers. Perhaps consider getting a Canon ST-E2. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-Speedlite-ST-E2-Shoe-Mount-Flash-for-Canon-Mint-Condition-/263188477809?epid=102489166&hash=item3d47417771:g:na4AAOSwcgNZDoJ1

My best friend shoots Canon and she has Yongnou transmitters.
We get along great despite being equipped differently.

Perhaps that's because you are 'equipped' differently!
