Greetings fellow Hoggers.
I have had my camera gear, about 12,000 insured through State Farm for the last several years and when I opened my renewal statement my jaw hit the floor. My premium went up $81.00 annually. Is there a more reasonable option I'm unaware of out there, or should I just bite the bullet and renew? I guess State Farm is gouging me to pay for hail storms and hurricanes. Sheesh!
Jakebrake, I bought a separate policy from USAA to insure about $6,000 of equipment. The premium is only $161 per year. I had an incident where I dropped my Nikon at the Naval Academy. I reported the damage on a Friday, got an estimate to repair and within one week I received a check for the repair estimate. No hassle. Incredibly efficient and very polite.
My Allstate rep wasn't interested in adding my camera gear to my policy. Basically said if I had a claim they would probably cancel my policy later. I can't risk losing homeowners coverage in Florida, try to find a new one.... hah!
I finally found a coverage that I thought I could live with through Lexington Insurance. I have about $25,000 worth of coverage, cost is about $500 a year. I did have a claim with them a few months ago after dropping my 5D Mk III while on a hike in the woods. Costs $600 to fix at Canon and they paid the claim within 2 weeks of my submitting the invoice. Great claims agent too. Unfortunately they make no provision for all that little stuff you've bought over the years. You must list every piece of gear covered.
I'm in search of a new provider that will cover me in case of a catastrophic lost. As Irma looms upon us here in Florida that will have to wait.
Happy shooting
