My six year old computer is an HP DV9535NR, with 8600M GS processor with 256 MB, note book PC, which really is greek to me. Can someone please tell me if this computer will handle my future Nikon D800E?

I'm going to jump in and give you permission to get a nice, new, fast computer. there have been lots of changes over the last six years. I don't like to go more than three without upgrading to a new machine.

Others will have more technical reasons, but better and faster would be my reasons.

It will have trouble. Not enough ram. As Jerry suggests, a new one is in order.

I buy a new computer every 18 months. A Mac one cycle and a PC the next. I find I need 2 of everything. A Mac cannot do all a PC can do and I need both to stay current.

I use Macs to humor my artist friends who use them for video. I do like my Macbook Air 11" with 4 gigs ram and now the new Air 11" can be configured with 8 gigs ram. An Air 11" will easily handle D800 files and video. It is a real computer unlike any iPad. iPads are good for show and tell, but not much with heavy PP.

Big hard drive eating files on that Nikon better start looking for a new one.You spend hours just try to download those 36mp files. Plus the monitor quality has changed in just the past 3 years.

It's not that bad. My almost 3 year old HP laptop easily handles D800 files. They do not take hours to download.

Your 8600M GS is a 600mz 128 bit graphics card, good 5 years ago, but sad now. Also I'm sure you dont have enough RAM. With desktops selling for $300 and laptops for under $500, I think it's time to retire your dinosaur.

Some folks will still have a 1980's Sinclair Spectrum computer and swear by it. What we want and what we can afford might not match, but if you can afford a new computer then why not?

If you can't afford a new computer then why not play with the files and see if the hardware can cope?

If not then would new RAM be compatible with your old system? If yes then consider buying more RAM and bigger hard drives..

just me thinking aloud

If you are going to use a 800E you need all the processing power that you can get and propbably at least 12 G Ram. What program are you using to process your photos?

I doubt he would find ram for a machine that old , and think back that far ram was expensive to get what he needs would cost more than a modern machine , its probably sdr ram if I recall properly it was 100 bucks for a tiny 10 meg strip now I bought one 8 gb for 100

Your machine will not do any of the video files well and will run at a snails pace with photo downloads. Also, any OS upgrade is impossible with only 256 MB of RAM. Those RAW files will eat up hard disc space in no time flat. A machine this old will be fine for simple Jpeg files but even those will be huge coming from a D800 that's set to high resolution and with an FX lense. Jerry and everyone else here is right about their suggestion that its time for a serious upgrade to a new computer. Congratulation on your excellent choice for a camera upgrade, but I'm afraid your laptop just won't cut the mustard. You'll see, the first time you attempt to download photos to it and it chugs along endlessly as if it was hungup, but it will eventually display your photos and store a few anyway. LOL. You 're hard drive will become full in no time flat though. And completely forget about any video files till you do upgrade since the frame rate and video handling capabilities of any machine this old will not do your camera any justice. Even the addition of a Graphics card won't help since your buss speed and controller are too slow, let a lone the lack of any RAM to speak of. The basic minimum CPU for Win7 64 needs a 1 Gig clock, 2 Gig RAM and for any real video you need a video card with 1Gig of video memory locally.
