Cruisin' to the southern Caribbean on Oct 1 with the SX50
Cebating to purchase the 430EX III-RT Canon Flash or not. Its $250. I suppose I could buy the more powerful one but its too pricey
Not sure if the 430 is necesary for my needs. I have only used flash for a few indoor shots and fill for outdoor. I firmly believe in enough flash power.
Several times i have searched this subject of a flash for the SX50 and it seems to be universally accepted that Canon brand is the way to go as it will be FULLY compatible with the camera.
I have seen at least one aftermarket flash in the 430 range that also includes led light for video. Would like to have that if i could, but what's more important for me is all the functions and abilities of the 430 to work with my camera.
Any thoughts?
I've never used an external flash in my SX50. My DSLR doesn't have a built-in flash, so when I need to take flash pics I use my Sx50 and its flash. Do you find it not strong enough? I guess I'm curious why you want to use an external when you have an internal.
There are after mkt flashes, I just bought one for my Sony. Get a "High Speed Flash"
"But in bright sun, it would seem great to have a way to increase the sync speed so we can open the aperture. This is simply impossible with the focal plane shutters, but many DSLR systems do have a way (sort of a kludge) to allow this, called High Speed Sync flash (Auto FP). However, it does reduce the effective power of the flash to about 20% (maximum distance range will less than half). " toward bottom of page

Any OBF {OnBoard Flash} is going to produce a narrow beam close to the lens cylinder, resulting in red-eye and harsh shadows which some of us find to be unpleasant.

Have you tried using a diffuser?
You can buy the Canon 430EX from KEH for a lot less, I did.

When Bought My SX50 in February 2014 (Mainly it was Because of the Built in Flash Hot Shoe), I also Bought a Sunpack Digi Flash 3000 that Ran Me $70.00 at Samy's Camera Here in L.A.
It Did Wonders For Me, I Could Shoot Flash with this Sunpack Cause I Had a Sunpack For My Pentax Film Cameras Back in the 80's, & They Were A Good Rival to Vivitar When it Came to Independent Camera Flashes.
You Have Bounce & Swivel on the Digi Flash 3000 Which is a Godsend Also!
With My Current Digi Flash 3000 on My SX50 the Flash Range is 92 Feet, & When I Shot Functions at My Church, Photos Came Out Clear When I was Way Across the Rectory.
This Disadvantage with the Digi Flash 3000 is that a Lot of Red Eye on My Photos, That Was One Issue.
That Other Issue was in July 2014 5 Months After I Bought the SX50 & Sunpack Flash, When I Shot Photos From the Digi Flash 3000 The Flash Was Somewhat Acting Up, Photos Were Getting Dark, When I Shot From the Flash Range, Even if it was 5 Feet Away! I don't know What the Hell Happened?
I Did Send the Flash to Samy's & They Sent it Off to Sunpack in New Jersey, I got Another Digi Flash 3000 Back in 2 Weeks, Sunpack Did Not Explain What Happen?
I Even Brought a Post on UHH Asking if Anybody Had Experience with the Sunpack Digi Flash 3000, Very Little Response From UHH Members.
I don't know if this was the Right Flash for the SX50 or what? This Flash was Recommended to Me By a Samy's Sales Rep who also Sold Me My SX50 at the Same Time!
I Seldom Use the Flash Now, Only My Built In Flash on My SX50, Which Drains My Battery on the SX50, If I Take a Lot Of Flash Photos.
In My Opinion to You Find You A Indy Flash Like Sunpack & Vivitar or Whoever? That is "SOLID!" & Will do the Job For You & Not Act Up!
Do Your Homework on the Indy Flashes!
Also... You also know that if you Shoot Flash or Non Flash Photos from Your SX50 & They Come Out Kind of Dark You Can Adjust the Contrast with the I-Contrast on Your Menu Button on the SX50.

For what it is worth, when I bought my 1st DSLR I got the Canon 550 EX to go with it. It is compatible with the SX50 HS and I have used it that way too. In fact, that is what made me choose the SX50. I take a lot of shots with flash.

Get the more powerful one, but go for the Yungnuo, its just about a hundred bucks, but very similar to Canon's 600 RT!
With my SX50/SX60 cameras I have used the Canon 270EX II flash. The cost is around $175.00.

speters: have you had personal experience with the yognuo and the sx50! I will probably order one and try. Just worried that in the past some forums suggested that most aftermarket flashes arent that all compatible with the SX50. I think perhaps TTL and maybe other things
I have about 23 days leftg for my cruise so plenty time to eval and return also i am borrowing a canon 430 flash today, so after the weekend I will be more in the know.
thanks all for the suggestions
originally for aftermarket i would always consider Metz but this Yonguo thing is reputable and inexensive I suppose i could call B&H and ask if they have any knowledge of non compatibility issues with Youngno and EX50 (one of these days i will remember how to spell younguo)

Hi 'haroldross'... --- Since you have both the '50' and '60' can you tell me if there is a significant reduction in the '60' Image-Quality (as was claimed by some HOGS); -- -- Another Ques.: Does the Pop-up Flash of the '60' have a wider expanse (to handle the 21mm Wide-end); I like to take pictures of guests at Weddings, while they're seated at the round tables for Ten; I have the wives seated, with husbands standing behind them; ...but because the tables are SO close together{at some Events}, I'm forced to be as close as the opposite side of the Round table (i.e. 6' to 8' away from guests). SOOO, Harold, will the Flash be BOTH wide enough AND/OR bright enough to appropriately illuminate ALL the faces.???
