Just watched CNN News and Miami is preparing now for a possible hit by hurricane Irma. Any evacuation of the city of Miami, will come from the authority of the County. According to the Mayor of Miami. Mayor of Miami said to fill up all empty bottles with tap water, now. The more the better. A flashlight is imperative to have in any disaster. I have 3 of them and many alkaline D cell batteries.

I'll not try to predict a path, but our Tampa meteorologist gave a very insightful report Tuesday saying "Hide from wind but run from flooding". He said if you google this phrase you will get hundreds of hits because it is a fact from meteorologist professionals. In other words, you can hide from wind but not from rising water. Essentially for those of us in the middle of the state he was recommending NOT evacuating unless in a flood prone area. Wouldn't want to get caught in a traffic jam, with no gas/motels available. Seek a shelter if you are in a mobile home or poorly constructed house. One person gave an interesting site that is supposedly highly accurate showing probable projections of the hurricane's path.... but of course, as has been said, weather conditions can change at any time. This far out is a guessing game. Enter VENTUSKY in google to see highly interactive projections that are constantly changing with the air currents etc. It is addicting.

Nothing will change the path of this storm at this point. With some degree of wobble, on Sunday, South Florida will be hit with the largest storm ever recorded in the Atlantic. And then the storm will move north through the center of Florida.
Harvey and Irma just 2 weeks apart.

I am in Miami and shuttering today. I was here for Andrew. I hope my new roof holds up. The northern turn is the key as to which coast will get the greatest wind and rain. I am putting my best camera gear in pelican cases and wrapping the rest in heavy plastic garbage bags. Not much else to do. Hope the generator runs after the storm. However, with the speed of the storm, rain is probably going to be fairly persistent for many hours.

I live on the beach in ft.lauderdale, I have my shutters up my food and water the yard cleaned up. Still don't know if I am going to stay.I might leave town Friday morning don't know yet, waiting for Thursday 5pm forecast. Good luck to everyone in it path.

My wife and I will stick it out in our home in SW Miami. The house will be shuttered, valuables protected, and the yard cleaned up; but the winds of 185mph, and the rain might easily, simply take the roof. I saw that with Andrew in 1992.
One can only do what can be done. You can't stop what's coming.
I suppose I will take pictures.

Get out there with a cordless drill and some screws and screw the roof down!

Newer roofs in Florida are attached using hurricane straps. The sheathing must be nailed with ring shank nails every 6 inches.

I'm not so sure about sending people north along the coast - Remember Sandy did a number on New York. The Gulf Stream is a "good" feeder for a hurricane.
