Fairly new to tje Dslr world. Bought a Canon Rebel T6. Have tried to read the manual. Very confusing. Bought the book for dummies and have come a long way with my knowledge. What I can't figure out is how to use my external flash. It is a Vivitar zoom slave flash. The flash does work but what do I have to do to get it to work with my camera. I do have a hot shoe built in. What settings do I change in my camera? The manual with the flash just says to mount and turn power to normal. Help.

Which model Vivitar flash? A newer one or an older one you had in film days?

Don't know about a rebel t6, but if the flsh is a ttl and your camera can handle ttl, just put it on the hot shoe and test it indoors to start.

This thread may already be wandering. "TTL" stands for "Transistor Transistor Logic" and normally is used to refer to devices which have imbedded intelligence. Normally a flash labeled "ttl" has specific logic for a specific brand of camera; for example, Canon and Pentax each has its own variant of "ttl". I have a Canon 550EX flash which I purchased back when I was using a Canon Rebel camera; I still use it with my Pentax K-30, but I have to use it as a dumb manual flash in that setting.

Slave units are normally built to interface with some kind of "smart" master unit. Again, each brand has its own way of implementing master/slave relationships, so a lot more information is needed from the OP. Surely this flash is not marketed as a generic slave unit; unless it is designed to respond to the light from a flash, it must be designed to work with a specific form of master. In any case the user must also have a master control available before using a slave makes any sense.

Note: in discussion of the new Nikon D850, one of the complaints has been its lacking an OnBoard Flash; some users seem to depend on its ability to serve as a weak master flash, not to provide light, but to control an off-camera slave.

Did you read the flash manual? If I were to read it for you I need to know the model number.

In the context of flash photography it means "through the lens".

Regardless of acronym it means flash and body are talking to each other .... which requires you have proprietary version supported by your brand

I can't find a site where I can safely download the manual. As much as I know about the flash that it is strictly a slave flash triggered by the built in flash. There is a foot that you can mount it on the hot shoe but the foot has no contact and the camera doesn't trigger the flash via the hot shoe. It has preflash suppression to avoid firing before the camera actually open the shutter. I can't see the back of the camera so I don't know if it has either power control or exposure control. It's definitely doesn't support TTL.

True - but "through the lens" is how it is used in photography. Your post just tries to confuse somebody new to the topic and doesn't impress anybody.
