This is not a new concept with digital either. A knob on the Pentax "Super Program" that I purchased in 1984 provided two views to the same control.
Viewing the bottom window, I rotated the lower dial to set ASA/ISO
Viewing the numbers on the right, I rotated the entire thing to set a simple exposure compensation.
Your old timey camera thingy looks like it could use a cleaning.

I'm not a stickler for such things so do whatever makes you feel good but just so you know, this probably belongs in the Photo Analysis section.
I think you may have quoted the wrong person in this instance. Cheers

Yeah, it has now gone 33-1/2 years without a good exterior cleaning.
I'm not quite sure how to clean it - it's predecessor was ruined by a slight amount of spray from Niagara Falls.
Incidentally, the camera also has at least two more serious issues. The gap on the left of the dial, where we can see 20 and 32, should be filled by a button that pushes down those metal pieces forming a catch {allowing the ISO numbers to turn within their window}; now I have to use a key or something to depress the catch enough if I want to change the ISO setting. Also, one of the metal anchors the strap attaches to came off.
