Son in law wants to buy me a new computer, for my birthday and retirement. Going to get back into taking more pictures and making videos. What computer and software do you guys recommend?

What's your budget and camera? How much work do you partake in video? How much storage do you need? Are you a Windows or Apple user? Really need more info otherwise you will definitely get 1000 different answers here. You will probably get that anyways ;)

Once you try Mac, you never go back (to Windows).

In my opinion, HP is the best choice. You may go online and custom build the system that will suit your needs, as well as talk to a live tech to help you with knowing what you need to satisfy your needs. Apple is a good system, but if you are not familiar with their system, there will be a small learning curve.

Probably stay with widows. Got 3200 Nikon and Sony video camera. Never gave me a price range. He makes good money. Will be doing some up grades on my stuff in the future. With my fishing and shooting Sporting Clays.

The Dell XPS15 laptop has worked out well for me. Great high resolution screen. Have the solid state drive but store my pics on separate portable drives - prime and backup.

Of course, everyone has a personal preference.

I used both Macs and Windows PCs every day for years. The Windows computers were necessary for my work, the Macs were always by personal choice. The Macs gave the much easier "driving experience" and, when something went amiss, I was often able to pinpoint the Macs problems, but the Windows operating interface was usually too confusing.

Bottom line is where will YOU go when your computer acts up? Apple support is top-rated. If you are lucky enough to live near an Apple store and walk into an Apple Genius Bar with your errant computer, even if it's out of warranty, they are apt to help you. But where can you go with an Acer or Dell or H-P or other Windows computer? Nada. Those brands don't have walk-in Genius Bars.

Good luck.

Like many here advise for cameras, consider refurbished from the manufacturer. Check both Dell and HP websites. Over the years Ive had great luck with both and with a refurb you get more bang for the buck. I've used a Mac laptop for awhile at work but since I "grew up" with Windows, the layout and keyboard shortcuts never clicked for me. I'd advise to get a big solid state drive and plenty of USB and HDMI ports.

Congrats on having a generous son-in-law who is willing to help with your hobbies.

I switched from windows to Mac about 10 years ago and have never had a thought about going back.

I use a MacBook Pro 16 gig ram 1TB SSD drive. My wife uses a HP same config. Funny she comes to my computer when making photo books on Shuttfly. Most likely because she likes my 32" high Rez monitor.

But agree with another reply. Once you go nav you never go back.

There are some powerful PC computers which cost less then macs. YouTube offers suggestions.

TOWER. I have a 34" monitor that I'm keeping, with my old eye's still need cheaters. I still want to use my big key board, for hunting and pecking.

I'd get a Dell XPS 8900. The Core i5 processor and 16GB of memory would be fine. If you like the idea of the Core i7, get that. I don't know anything about the new Intel Optane memory. I've bought mine with minimal memory and then added my own - much cheaper. I always buy a desktop with the basic hard drive and use that for the OS and programs. Then I add a larger internal drive - HGST Ultrastar of 4GB - for all data. Even better, replace the C drive with a Samsung 500GB SSD, and you'll get a major speed increase.
